Boat Towing Insurance

#1 Post by IrnGynt » Thu Jun 14, 2012 5:21 am

Leaning towards BoatUS Towing as they seem to be the most represented out there and the price seems right. Anyone out there have experience with them? I searched the forums and noted a couple of people use the service and no complaints.

Also, I spend alot of time on Lake Gaston (NC) where cell signal for me is very spotty so I'm thinking I'm going to need something like the Delorme inReach as well.

A mans gota do what a mans gota do. I have been boating for 51 years without any towing insurance from anyone. I have been towed in twice by passing boats. I have towed a total of 8 into dock. People used to go out of their way to make sure you were o.k. not so today you will be passed by 12 to 15 before a good boater will stop to help you. The Problem with towing ins is that you have to be able to reach them and then wait until they come.

My insurance is a cell phone with my neighbors' phone numbers programmed into it. If I'm stuck on the lake, I'll just call'em to come and get me.

That's one time that living on a highly populated lake is a positive.

I have been towed twice by our BoatUS franchise; the first time on Mothers Day, the second time was just 2 weeks later after the problem was "fixed"! They were very helpful and the operator was very skilled and experienced. The first time took a while to arrive, but the second response was much shorter, within an hour on a Sunday night!

I've got towing and on-water mechanical coverage (fuel, battery, etc.) as part of my boat Insurance. I won't mention the name to avoid violating any possible forum advertising restriction, but Flo talks about it quite a bit.

$110 a year for full coverage with no deductible on the boat and $250 deductible on the trailer.

I would say check with your boat insurance company too. I have $500 towing or emergency repairs that comes included with the policy. All I can say is "Like a Good Neighbor"

Only problem with a $500 limit is the average tow in my area is $800-$1000. I have BoatUS and as cheap as unlimited towing is, it's well worth not getting hit with a tow bill. Boat US is literally everywhere with very few areas the don't have coverage. A buddy of mine runs TowBoat US out of Chesapeake City and he's got a tow lit3erally several times a day. Tow boat operators charge you from the time they leave their dock until the time they return to port, so it will cost you big $$$.

I have the BoatUS towing coverage...as BMR said, it's cheap insurance. I also have AAA roadside assistance for my cars. The way I figure it, one episode where I need a tow will make up for several (or more) years of paying for the coverage. I often boat on weekdays, when there aren't a lot of people on the lake - if I'm relying on the mercy of another boater to tow me in, I could be sitting there for a while.

I have boat us. The second time out we lost the throttle and to idle home. well most the way. wife said to call the tow company,we have $50.00 deductible. called them because it was getting dark the bill with the $50 was only $590.00. We made it home around 10 pm. Next day upgraded to unlimited towing and haven't used it since, but it there.

My decision to make between Sea Tow and Boat US was who had the closest boats to where I generally go. Sea Tow was an hour or more out and Boat US was in the same area.
