Show me your straps!

#1 Post by ronb » Wed Jun 27, 2012 1:49 pm

Boat tie down straps that is.
When I first got my pontoon I hauled it a couple times to the lake (40 miles each way) with just the winch strap hooked up, but not tight. The pontoon shifted 2-3" rearward each direction, which sort of freaked me out a little bit.

I have started strapping down the rear now but only on one side (boat passenger side, right side as you look at it from the rear) because the ladder is in the way on the other side. Once I did hook up a long 16ft ratchet strap all the way from one lift eye to the other lift eye, which cleared the steps as it went diagonally toward the center but then I was back to using just 1 strap, and I thought it looked like hell.

On the back of the pontoon I can use 'normal' 4ft boat tie down straps to go between the lift eye and the frame hole. I am not real crazy about this because there is a chance that I could pinch the wiring, and it is a thin steel plate welded on to the end of the frame tube.

And there aren't any real good spots to hook on the front, do you guys use longer straps and wrap around the frames?

My trailer had a defective winch post when it was new (the trailer is a 2012 Newmans 22-24ft Bunk) and they shipped me out a new winch post, and while it is a different style than the original, in my opinion it is a better style that makes boarding easier by moving the grab handle from the center position to the sides. But I also lose the 'crotch' that used to be in between the 2 downlegs on the original, which I had been looping my straps through.

What I am hoping to find is something like this rear axle strap bracket that I can bolt onto my frame rails that provides an eye to put my tie down strap hook through.

I'd like to be able to bolt it on like a spare tire carrier..

but my searching skills are failing to find me something suitable today... I can make some if I need to, but there has to be a vendor out there somewhere that offers these things..

Maybe something like the small straps in this picture where are designed to wrap around something and then have a hook through their loops? Problem is that I don't want to have to worry about losing them or having them rub through the paint..

I always use 2 straps on the back! How about getting a pair of stainless steel welded closed eye bolts or the cad plated forged eye bolts and drilling through the frame rails and use thick 1" or larger diameter washers under the nuts bolted permanently on frame rails. Just myhumble suggestion. I did that on a race car trailer for tieing a car down, never had a problem. :donno

I was hoping to avoid drilling holes in the frame, promoting rust and overtightening bolts could potentially crush the frame.

I saw these on another boat trailer site

But I do like KISS solutions.

I'll keep on shopping, but if I have to make some that are bolt-on, I will.

Measure your frame and then acquire a couple if these complete with plates and nuts. Then go find yourself some of these to screw onto the top of the remaining exposed thread and you should be good to go for a sound sturdy anchor point in which to fasten your straps to. Fact is I just very well may follow this advise on my own trailer..

After a very close call while towing I added straps up front. I just drilled a hole on the bottom side of the frame for the hook to go into. . No rust 5+ years later. Also added a safety chain at the same time.
