is there a air filter on a merc 60hp efi 4 stroke???

I was thinking only the larger Mercury motors--115 hp+--had filters.

Most outboards just have flame arrestors.

There should be a foam "filter" around the air intake. If it needs cleaning, all you need to do is take it off. Wash it with mild detergent, (Dawn works good) let dry and reinstall.

why does a boat motor need a air filter? there is not dust on the water as I was told this many years ago. If they need one where can I get one for my 50hp?

I belive there is always dust in the air at some point.
