Outboard Trim: Goes down but not up

#1 Post by DonCabo » Thu Jul 05, 2012 11:36 am

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Independence Day!

I keep my boat in the water year 'round and always travel in deep waters, therefore I never really use the trim on my outboard. Last week I yanked her out of the water to pressure wash the toons and realized that the engine no longer tilts up. From the throttle control, down seems to work just fine (it's all the way down and I heard the hydraulics working). However, "up" on the throttle control does nothing. No hydraulic sounds or anything. Also, from the engine cowl control switch, it also doesn't go up.

Any ideas out there as to what I could look for? I'm assuming it's not electrical; I would believe they'd be on the same fuse/circuit. Very strange.

Thanks in advance.

Is that on the Bentley? Should be under warranty, isn't it? Since it doesn't work with either switch, I would agree with Ron. I'ld jump on an E-tec forum and see what kind of response you get. Never happened with the E-tec on the Manny. Not that I'm wishin it woulda or anything.
Good Luck with it, hope its under warranty!

Thanks..... Yea, it's under warranty. The caveat is, my marina is not an authorized Evinrude repair shop (probably should have thought about that). I either have to travel up the lake 25 miles or take her out of the water and up the road 5 miles to an "inland" marina (and I have no trailer). I'm waiting on my marina to get back in touch with me as they *may* have the means to do warranty work via an outsourced tech. Either way, not an urgent issue whatsoever, just a nuisance. :-)

I was just trying to edumacate myself via the immense wisdom of the group. :biggrin2 I know a lot of stuff about boating, but engine/mechanical has always been foreign to me.

Yup, most likely a relay.

I don't know how the E-tecs are laid out but my old 200 hp 'Rude had two relays under the engine cover, one for down, one for up. Both of them shot craps within days of each other. Easy to remove and replace, even for Mr. BadWrench (me).
