ROLAND wrote:Hang in their gramps.... I'm sure it will all get worked out.. I know it must be frustrating as hell with what all you've already gone thru with that Merc.... but I kinda feel like some of the other here on the board... think it could be a dealer set up issue.... You gotta know that Mercury will be on the horn to your dealership to get this matter resolved.... Like I said, hang in there and give Mercury a chance to at least look into it.... Good luck!
Roland, I have no choice but to give the dealer a chance to fix it, Merc said they will help the dealer if the dealer asks for help. You would think after 2 new motors failing they would send someone down to the dealer and check the motor & the dealer out to see why they are failing, unless it's happening all over.
I can't believe that i'm the only one having problems with this new motor.

I'm not too confident on your dealer...the shop that has worked on my toon did a great job replacing the engine, but failed at rebuilding the carb this season! Kinda funny since the owner still gets calls from Reggie Fountain and others for help with their Mercs, but his techs needed 3 tries and 6 weeks to stop my carb from flooding. Had a similar issue with my truck where it was returned with new brake lines and the ABS failure light and brake system lights were on, plus the brake pedal went right to the floor with no resistance! Obviously the truck was not checked or test-driven before returning it. A face-to-face meeting with the service manager took care of it without any threats(but I was prepared for the worst).
I would contact the dealership owner by email (for a record of the discussion) and describe your problems in detail, including previous attempts to correct. Its quite possible he/she is unaware of your issues. Feel free to express how you feel about this - the intent is to put the ball in the owner's court. Don't threaten any action, just give them an opportunity to do the right thing. If they refuse, THEN you can take them to court, share on Facebook, twitter, blogs, forums, etc.
Best of luck to you!

Playcat, The owner is aware, it's a small dealer and he keeps on top of everything. It's hard at my age to keep loading and hauling this thing around.
Being fairly new to Georgia there's not to many people that I can ask to help me, I have to impose on my son in law, who is a great guy, but he has a job and the dealer closes at 6 pm.

Gramps sorry for your situation. I have issues with mercury I will never buy a new mercury product. I can tell u this I battled them since mine was new there cs sucks or the lack of! My advice as hard as it is! Stay calm an be persistent with them! I blew up an understand where you are coming from! I have spent thousands of dollars in water pumps an diesel fuel pulling my boat to different dealers at mercurys request! Nothing sucks worse than buying a new boat an having issues. It sucks its not like a car when warranty work is needed! Which l will never buy a new boat again for this reason its no different than used if it breaks in half u get to keep both halves. Last if it comes in black send it back! Good luck!

You do not have to take your motor to the dealer you bought it from. See if there is another dealer that wants to take a swing at it.

Greg, The reason that I need to take it back to the dealer that I bought it from besides the Motor is they also have to install a special trim cable.
The original trim gage never worked with this motor and a special cable is supposed to be in this week, it's only been on order for a few Months, another reason why I love Mercury so much, LOL! It had to do with Digital not talking to Analog according to dealer.

Who have you talked to at Mercury?
I think I would have someone on the phone every day and the mailman in Wisconsin would recognize my address.
When I had my problem with the 60, the region rep was very helpful and he arranged move to the dealer that fixed it. They still would not do anything about the parts the other dealer sold me that didn't fix anything.

Gramps, so sorry to hear this.
The shifting issue points to the lower unit.
How have you been torquing the prop retaining nut?

I haven't been torquing it as hard as the first one that I took off. It took a pipe on my wrench to remove it. I asked Mercury about this and they said if it wasn't put on real tight customers would complain of props coming off. How can anyone win with that answer, the book calls for a certain amount of torque but Mercury said different.

Review your owners manual for the specification on the nut for future reference.
The nut tension affects bearing pre-load and is generally far less than any other application of a nut that size.
The stainless cotter pin (new) is ultimately the "retainer" so I would beg to differ with the "mercury source" you quoted.
I'm hoping for a cable issue
JD
JDB, The book calls for 55 ft lbs torque on nut. There is no cotter pin, it uses a ss crown type washer. The motor was vibrating a lot at idle speed, I don't know id idle was set to low ( 750 rpm's ) or other problems?

Ok good - different setup than I've ever seen.
I've been scratching my head about your prop changes that all yielded the same performance - I guess your motor has been slowly failing and affecting prop tests ???
Can someone loan gramps a boat?

My Merc 4-Stroke 115 idles at about 800 RPM (I probably couldn't tell 750 from 800 on the analog gauge), so that sounds about right. Mine doesn't have the "Shake like a wet dog at idle" feature, however. Maybe that's a feature on the 150?

If you are not running a Mercury prop they will tell you that rattle at slow speeds is normal. They have a cutsy name for it.

Greg, It's a Mercury prop, 4 blade Revolution, I hope this prop, ( dealer installed ) isn't to heavy for the motor.
I talked to the new service guy and he said they would go over everything, he wasn't aware of all the stuff that I went thru on the 2 motors.
When the 3 props were installed they all spun freely by hand with no noise. I really feel that there was a problem from day one and no one realized it. I hope the new service guy is good.
