How to remove old stickers?

#1 Post by D.L. » Tue Jul 17, 2012 12:22 pm

My registration numbers are probably 10 yrs old and there the full rectangle stickers from wal mart or such. I tried getting them off with goof off, hair drier, plastic putty knife. It all results in the paint coming off the fencing. :censored Help!!!

Get some Goo Gone -- it will work. I tried some Goof Off and ran into the same issue you did -- it started removing some of the paint from the fence. The Goo Gone will take a little more rubbing and elbow grease, but it will eventually cut through all of the glue (if you already have the layer of stickers removed). I also used a hair dryer to heat up the stickers to make them a little easier to come off (but it left the glue behind).

If that doesn't work 3M makes a decal remover, we used them all the time, you can remove a decal required to have for that race without damaging the paint at all.

WD-40 is a excellent adhesive remover. Was recommended by 3-M a few years ago on a special project I was working on. Worked like a champ when nothing else had.

I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people.. I'm just saying let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem work itself out.

Believe it or not I've had good luck using Coca-Cola and cigarette ashes.

When I replaced the pin striping on my PC last year, a heat gun (a hair dryer on steroids) did the job quickly. Simple Green removed any remaining glue.

The problem Im running into is getting the sticker it self off :donno the residue after its off comes off with goo gone. Its dryrotted almost so it flakes in little pieces :x Just hoping theres a better way! I worked on it Sunday for 30 min, and got a 1/3 of one sticker off and scratched the paint 5 times. So with 8 on each side well :drink4 .... it should only take 24 hrs!

The 3m eraser wheel that Herb mentioned will make short work of any sticker, stripe,or decal, usually with no damage to the paint.

wd 40........mineral spirits........might try one of those plastic putty knifes and use a hair dryer. If the backside ( I guess we are talking fence) is accessable might heat that also. Meguiars paint cleaner does a good clean up job

I use Varsol. Doesn't hurt modern paint (though I wash it off quickly cause I'm chicken) and makes Goo Gone look like a Shirley Temple.
