hit a rock today not much damage but a question

#1 Post by tkrein » Wed Jul 25, 2012 9:48 pm

Well had the toon out today nice day in Bismarck little windy but still beautiful day. Any way hit a rock bolder with the motor so glad it was still there after I heard the pop. Well there is some scraping and a ding or well some of the metal has been torn out no hole. I want to reinforce it somehow the cone of the lower unit fill in the area that got scrapped I know bad description but wondering if I could just jb weld to fill it in and take up the area for strength or have a welder fill in the area.

Do not put Jb on it , because when you do give and go to a welder, he going to cuss you and charge you more to fix it right.

The welder will hit that JB Weld with his cup brush and blow it away in seconds (I just had to do it fixing a pool filter).
The real problem is JB Weld is not really that strong. (why it didn't hold on the pool filter can) If you are concerned about the structural integrity of that spot you need to have it welded. That means pulling the bearing carrier if it is up in the gearcase area.

soon as I get back to the boat I post a picture. I don't think its that bad but if another rock hits in that spot I think it might poke a hole. I'll go down today and get a pic. later

I know I've seen it before, but doesn't someone make a skeg protector? I think it was discussed on here somewhere.

That's at the mother in laws I made my niece and nephew clean the boat since they are the ones that wanted to go out. I like doing it that way, free labor and I get to have good time watching and helping. Also had them take a crayon and do the snaps see what I teach valuable lessons that will never leave them.

LC.
The wax from a crayon helps the snaps go on and off easier helps save on them. Think of it as lubricator for the snaps if they get hard Tomaso or unsnap take a crayon and run it into the snap works like Achaean every time.
