Anyone ever have dreams/nightmares about pontooning?

#1 Post by Ron Burgundy » Wed Jul 18, 2012 11:10 am

It's been very rainy and stormy in my neck of the woods lately so I haven't been able to get out on the water for a while now. It must be creeping into my sub-conscious because last night I had a little nightmare.

I was heading out solo in my pontoon. In my channel there are some exposed rocks maybe 20 yards north of the markers. They are the spoils from when the channel was dredged. On high tide they are covered, but on the lower tides they stick out a couple feet. Motoring past them I sometimes imagine the carnage that would insue if someone were to wash up onto them.

Anyhow, as I was heading out as I always do I see a dark object in the distance growing larger. Moments later I see what appears to be a HUGE cargo ship plowing ahead much faster that would be possible in reality. It was traveling opposite of my direction perhaps 20 yards to my port, and leaving behind it at least a 6 foot wake.

So now I am flanked by rocky spoils to my starboard, and this posessed cargo ship dragging a 6 foot wake to my port. I am becoming more and more frantic as the wake nears, and after weighing my options I decide that taking on the monster wakes head on will proabbly give me the best odds of survival. Moments before I start to motor up the face of the wave...I wake up.

I dream about pontooning all the time, my dreams are usually the same they go something like this, I'm out on the toon by myself because the wife has to work overtime so she will bring home a bigger pay check, when I spot a cabin cruiser full of topless bikini models sinking off in the distance. I push the throttle forward the 250hp Yamaha roars to life (remember it’s a dream) I pull alongside the sinking boat and save all the models along with a cooler full of beer and a case of body oil, the girls spend the rest of the day and into the night showing me how grateful they are for saving them from certain death. Then my wife sees me sleeping with a smile on my face, knowing I’m happy she wakes me up and makes me go cut the grass or wash her car.

Ron, if you lived in the south Chesapeake, that ship could be real and it goes faster than you do.
They have freighters that go 20 knots through there. You NEVER try to outrun one and cut in front of them. They are a lot faster than they look.

Some of these guys here are dodging big ships too.

Makes me happy to be back in my little puddle. We were out for 3 hours tonight and never saw another boat, even out at Ed's Island in the ICW.

Me too! The barge has less than two hours total running time this season with a bad carb and now a frozen starter. All this after three great seasons on a new engine...

I am not sure that I have ever had a dream or nightmare about it (don't usually remember my dreams), but when we pulled the boat out earlier this year to get it ready for the season, my wife was very adamant that we take it out as soon as possible. Since I am usually the one suggesting a day on the lake I was a little surprised, but not being one to let an opportunity slip by, I got everything ready.

I usually back the trailer in and my wife will drive the toon on or off the trailer. It turns out my wife had been having nightmares about suddenly not being able to drive the boat onto the trailer. So we practiced driving it on and off a few times and she did just as well as she always has. No more nightmares...

They don't always abide by speed restrictions in the Upper Bay either. I saw one tanker throw up a wake 1/2 mile from a field of moored boats that overwashed most of them. A couple broke free. Another winter 2 years ago a tanker speeding in the Canal threw up a wake that caused a wave to overwash the Chesapeake Inn's docks and heavily damage some high dollar vessels.

The middle Chesapeake Bay charts actually warn of wakes to 15 foot in the Baltimore harbor approach.

Funny you should ask,I'm on the down hill side of building my 25' tri-toon week ender[8x12]cabin and can't wait to get in in the water.Any how the other night I dreamed I was getting ready to depart and as I got down to the dock I see some @##$% heading for open water in my boat. What a sinking feeling[pun intended],heck it will be trailered not kept at a dock.I sure felt relieved when I realized I was dreaming.

We don't fish but I watch fish. I know where they are if I ever want to go get one. Yup, there are lots of snook and reds in the bay and the river. I see reds tailing along the mangroves most of the times we are out here.

As tough as it was on the water men, the net ban sure did help the mullet and that brings a lot of game fish in to eat them.
