Ron, now is when you start watching the weather
We are starting to get storms spinning off the African coast. Those are the ones that kick our ass.
Watch Ernesto and look for a dip in the jet stream or a high pressure system over Texas next week. That could turn the storm around and blow it right back at us,. Otherwise it will be a Texas Mexico event.
There is another one coming across the Atlantic too.
Pack your freezer with bottled water now. Walgreens has it on sale.
It keeps. If everything is still OK in November, toss them in your cooler and drink them on the boat.
Do you have a plan yet? Evacuate? Ride it out? How are your supplies? Generator? Toughen up your house?

Re: Ron, now is when you start watching the weather
I've been watching. We got evacuated due to flooding from Debby so I'm on alert now. My house is inland about 8 miles so we would probably ride it out here. My in-laws live on the water as you know, but their house is pretty tough and it's high. Any storm surge that gets into their home and the whole area would probably be devestated. The boats...that's another story. We have insurance.

Our friends in Texas and Louisiana might be the ones who need to be concerned about this one. Latest models show it heading in their direction. Terms and Conditions subject to change of course.

Those barrier islands can be wiped clean. Your inlaws may want to think about bunking in with you if the fit really hits the shan.
It looks like we dodged Ernesto. It might be a bad week to be in East Texas tho.

I think a lot will depend on if it hits the Yucatan and breaks apart, or if it shoots between there and Cuba. That could be bad for some people somewhere.

Either way, Texas or Louisiana I'm sure I will be busy, I manage people who are out on the oil & gas platforms offshore, I'm sure there will be lots of evacuations this week.

Now we are watching Florence, NOAA has that one going up the east coast. We just don't know if it will turn before it hits land.

Speakin' of watchin' the weather....we went out and bought a handheld VHF radio that has it's own mount on the dash....it has weather alert and has been instrumental in talking me off the river before the storm gets there...when it does show up....

Tropical Depression Seven is worth watching. Similar track as Ernesto, but a little further north.

Yup, that is what we do from August until about thanksgiving.
You really want to watch the weather in Iowa and Kansas. If they have a front that dips the jet stream down into South Texas it can turn that storm headed for the Yucatan around in the Gulf and blow it right back on us. That is the one we are afraid of.
They are really fairly rare but it only takes one.
Surge is the real killer and it only comes at us with a storm that is moving easterly across the gulf with a landfall slightly north of your house. Then the wind is straight in off the beach, blowing a wave of water in with it. The last 2 major storms I had here, Charley and Wilma, were coming in a direction that had the big wind south to north and north to south respectively. We had a lot of tree damage but no surge.
I have seen little no name storms that put water 3 feet over my dock, just because of the track.
