Awning Width - What size?
What size awning would you get installed / built for a pontoon + RV ?
The problem is I got an opportunity for a guy to set me up w/awning for fairly cheap.
BUT I don't have either the RV or pontoon boat... so there's the 2 big variables. I'll be purchasing pontoon this Fall... RV probably end 2013 or first of 2014.
I think the RV length will be <30 feet... so 30' should be plenty in length for pontoon, right?
SO my bigger questions is WIDTH... I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get enough width to fix side by side due to city codes.
What minimum WIDTH would you recommend for RV + pontoon (without having to exit the roof of the RV ... lol ) ??
Thanks

Re: Awning Width - What size?
Are you talking about having one of those prefab aluminum topped, square aluminum frame oversized carport thingy's installed? Are you talking about parking a pontoon and a travel trailer side by side? Are you going to have to back into the structure? Or, will you be able to drive forward into it?
Please give us more specifics on what you're wanting to do.
A 22' pontoon with an engine hanging off the rear and the trailer tongue sticking out of the front can push 30' total length. A structure would need to be about 15' wide just to handle a modern pontoon--8 1/2' boat and 3' on each side. A 10' ceiling height would be nice, as toons on bunk style trailers are pretty tall.
In recent years, 28' slider travel trailers have become a very popular size. With the trailer tongue, you're talking about 31' long and 8' wide. They also need a minimum of 3' on each side. A 15' x 40' space with a 12' ceiling would be sufficient.
Sounds as if you really need a 30' x 40' pole barn if you're wanting to park'em side by side. Or, two 15' x 40' structures if parked separately.
I recently had my new 24' pontoon in my driveway for a couple of weeks. Throw in the grandson's trampoline, and I didn't even have room to park the cars. I took the pontoon to our lake house and parked it on a 200' circular piece of property. I was barely able to get the boat around the circle due to trees being right beside the road. I'm not going to take it back out there.
Pontoons and travel trailers are just really large items, and a large yard would be required to store them both.

>>>>>Are you talking about having one of those prefab aluminum topped, square aluminum frame oversized carport thingy's installed?
Yes.. you described what I'm thinking here exactly.
>>>>>Are you talking about parking a pontoon and a travel trailer side by side? Are you going to have to back into the structure? Or, will you be able to drive forward into it?
1) Yes, I will have to back each into the structure.. side by side... no ability to pull through.
2) Mostly likely a Class 3 RV rather than travel trailer
3) Class 3 RV + Pontoon boat, side by side, backed in is most likely scenario.
The rest of your information is actually VERY VERY helpful. THANKS A 30' x 40' is actually going to be fairly expensive. Hmmmm.... I'll have to walk off the property area, it may not even accommodate that size for our rear property area. I'm suppose to leave a 5 foot by code (by memory, I'll check to make sure)... unless I'm able to get a variance (doubtful).
Thanks again !!!!

Re: Awning Width - What size?
I've never seen a pre-fab aluminum carport in the size you're talking about. My cousin has a large single unit with a Class A 36' motor home, and it's about 14' x 40' with a 15' ceiling.
A pole barn would probably be required, and they're seldom seen in a residential neighborhood. They'd probably be cheaper than the prefab unit, however they're also more structurally sound.
Sometimes it's easier to stash toys in a mini-storage lot that's setup for RV's and boats.

Re: Awning Width - What size?
The height will be a problem unless you go pretty high. I think 12ft would be the minimum. As far as wide 26 to 28 would be the very minimum. Of course 30 would be easier to get around the units while parked. My boat storage is 11ft high and 30ft long and its barley large enough for my 22' toon. I have to lower the top onto the sundeck to get it in and some of the tounge on the trailer sticks out form the front. This is a pole barn that me and my son built.

Re: Awning Width - What size?
Whatever you decide probably need to go a little larger. I allowed 35 ft for the center bay of the garage which was enough barely. Had to move the boat forward on the trailer 6 to 8 inches for the 24ft boat an trailer. Could have got a swing away tongue but the move forward took care of that. I ended up with a 9ft wide door but it is pretty tight getting an 8.5 wide toon in there. Height is 9ft an no problem there. Think I would allow for at least 10ft for the width of the toon alone.........doc

My lift cover is 10x22 for a 20' boat and I wish I had made it 24 long.

Re: Awning Width - What size?
Thanks everyone for help !!!
I walked it off, couldn't believe how small of area in feet it was compared to "look" of it. So I busted out tape measure... I only got about 25 feet wide and 30 feet long.
If I went any larger, I'd have to get variance from city from encroaching on property line (unlikely to get approval). So I'm not sure what to do... I may have to rent RV storage... but its about $80-100/ month depending how far I want to drive... and I HATE MONTHLY payments.. I'm type of person who likes to own things and hate to never see a end to storage payments. Boat slip is out of question, we go to to many different lakes.
Anywho... THANKS to all !!

Re: Awning Width - What size?
I think I would build the shelter for the boat and let the RV rough it. They are better able to handle the elements.
You could make a "pan roof" carport hanging off the garage pretty cheap if someone will sell you the material. They have it at the BORG but it is pretty expensive there. An aluminum supply house has it about half that price, 40% if they know you.
YMMV depending on how much market power the installers have.

Re: Awning Width - What size?
Greg I had to google Pan Roof carport. LOL
Yea, that's good idea. Thanks. I think I'm going to have to just separate the RV and the pontoon in different areas, I'm not going to get them side by side.
But that's okay, I'm not buying each at the same time. And the pontoon is 1st purchase, so I'm going to buy the cover for it 1st, plus as mentioned earlier its more of priority for coverage than RV anyway, then later I can get the other cover in another area on our lot for the RV... probably a Pan Roof would work as long as city don't have some crappy codes against it.

The main issue is wind code. You can disguise it pretty well by dressing up the edge. This is a pan roof structure.Kalop wrote:Greg I had to google Pan Roof carport. LOL
