Break in period

#1 Post by SCbarber » Sun Aug 19, 2012 5:42 pm

Ok the time on the boat hour meter and my watch is not matching up when I am timing for the break in period. I ran it for 2 hrs. or more and my boat guage is saying 30 min. Now which do I go by? I am thinking the boat hour guage but it sure is taking a loooooong time to get that first hour in. I also have pics but not sure how to resize them so they are not to large.

Was the motor running the whole time. Yamaha does not count "key on, motor off". A stand alone gauge will.

The dealer will always believe whatever the computer says.
If it means anything, the computer is about 5 hours lower than the console meter on mine (in 120 "motor" hours)

The feed back you can get off the new motors is pretty in depth so I would go with the lowest reading to be on the safe side. I had mine hooked up to the computer because the buyer wanted the hrs verified. It gave the number of hrs and minutes at a given rpm. Actually down to the tenth of a minute on the rpms. I had heard they could download a lot of info but still didn't realize it was that in depth. On the other side my first toon was showing 40 more hours than actual run time, because while cleaning it and listening to the radio, I had turned the volume down and forgot about it. Since it was wired directly to the switch it logged the additional hrs

I posted the print out from my Yamaha a few weeks ago. You can get the YDIS from sharkey on Ebay for $100 but I have the software if you want to try to make the cable. You need a $10 OBDII cable and the 3 wire Yamaha adapter

I don't know about Mercs. I bet he needed a different adapter but the CanBus OBDII cable is probably the same.
When I hooked op the cable and Yamaha software to my Ford truck it just said "Huh"?
I didn't try the Honda.

Come to think of it, a Merc shares a lot of stuff with a Yamaha but I thought the ECM was different.

Dealer said it was just probably something to do with the boat hour meter and they will adjust it when I take it in for service, nothing to worry about just go by my watch for the break in time. :nana

Something like 2000 RPM first hr. then 4200-4500 RPM the second hr. then any speed except full throttle for remaining 8 hrs. or something to that effect.

I was told 2000 rpms for the first hour and 3000 rpms for the next hour. Hours 3 to 10 are @ 4000 rpms max, but faster speeds are possible for no longer than 5 minutes. They also say to vary the engine rpm's throughout the break in, and to warm the engine up before laying the throttle on.

20 hours gets an engine oil change and lower unit grease change. They say an oil filter is not required, however it's a small price to pay for the change.

10 hours can be a long time when breaking in an engine. Just turn up the radio.

when I took delivery, the guy who brought it to me said, run up the rpm scale, 1k, 2k, 3k, 4k and back down for the first hour, but don't leave it on any one power setting for more that about 5 minutes and don't run it WOT for that first hour. It wasn't a problem because I had to drive the boat about 17 miles and had the first hour under my belt before I got back home.

I was told "just drive it". Then I read the owner's manual BEFORE I ran it, and found out what I was ACTUALLY supposed to do.
