As usual from the size of the "projected" path it looks like the whole country needs to get ready.
Born and raised in South Florida. Before Andrew, you didn't know a storm was coming until it was upon you. Now they have most people terrified for weeks in advance. I am all for being prepared, but the media has gone way overboard on their storm tracking and scare tactics. The real winners are Home Depot, Walmart, Lowes etc.
I'll take a hurricane anyday, versus tornadoes, floods, fires, mudslides.....
As long as your house is fairly well built and maintained, generally there are few problems from the wind. Most things damaged are screen enclosures, wood fences landscape etc. Andrew exposed how poorly homes were being built in South Florida. Usually the biggest causes of concern are flooding of homes in low lying areas from severe rain, and prolonged power outages.
These days most of the larger stores and gas stations have back up generators, and are open the next day even without power. Additionally there has been a big push to put utilities under ground so they are not wind affected.
If you ain't got the the blues, you got a hole in your soul...
