Howdy folks- here are some pictures I shot yesterday of the newly designed base for the PTM EDge pontoon mirror. Jeff Bohanan sent me a replacement mirror with a newly designed mirror base, this new base is great! fits snug, zero movement on the rail and does not vibrate at all, plus it looks great and only took me two minutes to install.

Cheers,
Robert

since the rail is not "captured" by the mount, is there any danger of it falling off? my guess is that it would sink pretty quickly.

No way will this mirror EVER fall off,on the bottom of the bracket there are (2) 1/4 inch allen screws that secure the mount to the pontoon railing. Man you could hang off this mount! If you want a permanent mount you can order one from PTMEdge,I went with the non-permanent mount, because I'm not comfortable at screwing holes into my railing. This mount doesn't budge after the allen screws are tightened, the entire mirror, especially the base is extremely well designed.
Also there is a 3M adhesive strip on the inside of the top bottom bracket that adheres to the top of the pontoon railing.
Again I'm in no way associeted with the maker,I'm just happy to have a mirror that fits our needs and looks cool. We plan on doing a lot of water sports with our tritoon.

Cheers,
Robert

That looks like a nice piece, but the machining is too expensive.
If you have the volume, try die casting it.

I also wonder what that pivot will be like after a few years of hard use.

We have used die cast process for higher volume products. On the marine products, we generally electropolish and anodize all of the products to give them a high finish and durability...not possible with die cast. Also, to your point about the pivot joint, billet machined aluminum is, on average, about 50% stronger than die cast product.

CNC machined aluminum tends to be a good fit for low volume high finish custom boat products....point well taken that it's not a cheap process...

Thanks,
Jeff

Love the mirror, but I boat in Alabama and the mirror is required to be larger. Specifically, "the vessel is equipped with a wide- angle mirror with a viewing surface of at least 500 sq. centimeters (78 square inches) and a field of vision of at least a 170 degrees."

Can't justify spending the dough and still getting a ticket!

I've never been a fan of mirrors on boats. Unlike motor vehicles on the highway, traffic can come at you from any direction. Having a mirror tends to keep a forward and aft "tunnel vision" scenario.

I teach my guys to have their heads on a constant swivel, so they know what's happening from every direction. At all times.

Carl.... couple of questions about your new mirror

1- is yours a permanent mount ( drilled holes into the railing )
2- if not, how solid is it? Do you think the constant "bumping" of waves from the lake or river could loosen it up....
3- and if it's not a permanent mount, how long does it take to put on and off.. I ask this because I trailer my boat every time I use it and I'm wondering how it would hold up as far as road vibration week after week?

I'll say this for it... expensive as it may be, it is one sweet looking mirror....

while i agree with the need to look in all directions, i find a mirror to be an invaluable safety device when pulling any type of recreational water sport.

You loosen the knob in the center and it folds down into the boat so it's under the cover
