Plugs on pontoons

#1 Post by davidwjacob » Fri Sep 28, 2012 5:13 pm

Hello All,

new here, this is my second pontoon boat, I have 24 ft harris flotebote. 1988, And tis boat has no plugs in the back of the pontoons. is that normal? my last pontoon boat had plugs. I got this boat used with a blown motor and moved my motor from the old boat to this one, when i got this boat , it had some water in the pontoons already, i didnt realize that till it was up at camp. i have used it for a season and a half already and the waterline on the pontoons has not gone down, so i know its not taking on water.

my question is , Has anyone every had plugs welded into their pontoons? and is it a bad idea?

let me know your thoughts please.

thanks
Dave

Some have the plugs on top of the pontoons.

+1 on looking on the top of the toons

Are they round, sectioned toons? Or, U Shaped with foam filled?

You'll need to solve the problem before mounting another motor.

Factory, my PC had them on top, very hard to get to. When I had a log repalced last year, they are on the inner side.

Harris puts them on top.

The last time I had a welder in here I had him put plugs on top in the back where they are easy to get to. I had some 1/4" thick aluminum that I had them weld in then I drilled and tapped it 1/2 NPT.
5/8" " vinyl tube will fit in that hole so it is easy to drain any water it collects but, so far I am not getting enough to worry about.
