#1 Post by fishinnut » Tue Oct 09, 2012 8:39 am

Does anyone here use "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner on their pontoon logs? It was recommended by a guy at my campground. asaid he has good results on his boat.

Scroll down this thread a ways. The place I bought my *used* pontoon from earlier this year used toilet bowl cleaner on them.

They looked great at first, but I didn't protect them with anything so later in the season they looked not so hot.

Also check out this thread, it has a larger version of my avatar picture from the day I test drove my pontoon before buying it.

Combined? I'm not a chemist & don't want to kill myself with some lethal gas...

Who or what is Pittsburgh in this context?

i know years ago my mom dropped a bottle of Works on the carpet. Every spot that the Works splashed onto, it ate the carpet. I would be careful with it regardless

I'm sure any of the aluminum cleaners, NAPA aluminum brightener, pink coil cleaner, etc. would eat thru your mom's carpet too. I mentioned The Works because it's a whole lot cheaper than the others.

Caution on mixing chemicals. I know a guy, who knows a guy, who's friend died, cleaning his boat after mixing a couple cleaners.

+1 on above. I'd either use the NAPA Aluminum cleaner, HVAC coil cleaner or the commercial aluminum cleaners that you get at boat dealerships.

After unsuccessfully trying to polish my new toons with Mothers Mag/Aluminum polish by hand, I ordered a Porter Cable D/A polisher/buffer. I'll be going to another brand of polish.

FYI: There are a number of good websites on auto/boat detailing that address many subjects--i.e. Autogeek and Meguiars.

The acids in bowl cleaners will remove oxidation and mineral deposits from your pontoons. Peroxide will remove organic material such as algae, bug poop, mildew, ect. There is no reason to mix them together, in fact mixing may make them less effectvie. If you want to try peroxide, don't buy the stuff at the drug store. Buy a product like Hillyard Suprox that is made to be used as a cleaner. It will do a better job and cost you less.

Do the acids in toilet cleaner and aluminum cleaners remove any aluminum--or is the foaming a reaction with oxides? Just wondering if with regular use the 'toons are getting thinner?
