22' 90hp on the ocean or bays

#1 Post by skylark » Sat Oct 13, 2012 11:06 am

I don't believe that I will ever want to actually go out on the ocean with a pontoon but if I did would I be insane? We would like to do crabbing and salmon fishing in the bays. I just don't know if a pontoon is up to the Oregon coast.

I go in the Gulf all the time with mine. My psyciatrist says I'm not technically insane.

I lived in Tillamook for several years. I did not have a pontoon at the time but used a 15' tri hull with a 50 hp Chrysler that worked excelent in the bay and a couple of times in the ocean when the tide/ weather was right. I have greater confidence in my toon. But as always keep your weather eye out. Have fun and stay safe.

That's crazy. :scared I used to go out into the ocean in a small runabout years ago only if it was like glass and then I was still nervous. The ocean moves very differently than Bays & lakes so even on a calm day you could find yourself in a swell. Pontoon boats do not take swells & water over the bow very well. Good luck.

I went shark fishing in the bay yesterday, it was pretty rough at first and I just took it slow and we got to the fishing hole anchored and spent the day. It was roughly 4' swells early in the day and I took several waves over the bow, no problem it runs right off. I love it, right out of the dock we had dolphins jumping within 2' of the bow and just a awesome scenery

Lake Mead and Lake Mohave in Nevada 'blow out' very quickly. We've launched on both to water like glass. Get 5 or 10 miles from a marina and you can get 3 and 4 foot swells. 'Toons' aren't a lot of fun in bad water. I've got a 75hp motor, really hate to be on the lake with a 40hp in bad water. We have pulled into a cove and waited the 'blow' out.

I primarily took my 22' with a 90hp up and down the inter coastal, out in the bays and twice out into the gulf. I wouldn't recommend the gulf too much as the weather can change at any time and the pontoon just isn't meant to cut through the waves, but if you're careful you'll be fine.

I don't believe that I would have the balls of steel needed to brave our coastline not because of the water coming over but because I would be concerned about the toons doing the splits. :prayer

I read this a while back but seeing that blue water in the Bahamas makes me wonder about our brown shit looking water in the Atlantic.
