new here and new boat!

#1 Post by jasonsamko » Thu Feb 14, 2013 6:14 pm

Just bought a 2013 sylvan 8522 lz le tritoon with rpt tubes and a mercury 150 fourstroke. came with full vynal floor with snap in carpet, seastar hydo steering, full underskin. I think i got a good deal (31500.00 before tax).
also bought a hoosier bunk trailer with tandem axles surege brakes, tritoon kit.

Really excited about this boat and hope i made a good choice. I looked at alot of boats. I really like the premier sunsation 220 as well but my wife didnt. the only bennington in our price range as a tritoon was the sl model and my wife didint like the layout as much as the sylvan. the berkshires and excursions were really nice but again we felt the layout of the sylvan was more to our liking.

Now its time to research props, anchors, gps/fishfinder, sharkhide, waxes adn protectants, cover (comes with a morring cover but going to get an oversized cover and make a pvc support for storing in the yard to keep the rain off and quick on and off. I will store it inside in the winter at the dealership).

any tips suggestions and opinions are greatly appreciated.

Congrats on the new toon. Bet you can't wait for boating weather. Good idea to do your homework for the prop to achieve optimal performance. Lots of help here on the forum and other internet sources. Might also contact the manufacturer thru the dealer for advice. Sometimes test data is available for your exact toon/motor and various props.

Get used to hearing this. The guys around here love their pics.
No pics and 'it didn't happen'. Kind of like fish stories.

Congrats on the boat! Welcome to the forum, you'll love it here! And... Suggestion..Yes I do!
I had a 2008 Hoosier trailer under my old Manny and it had the cheapest paint ever on it. It faded out and looked like crap within 6 months and it as always parked under the boat port, unless we were on the boat. Get some Sharkhide and go over the paint with a few coats. Before it starts to chalk up. It will keep it looking good forever!
Other than that! Use the hell out of it!

Congrats on your new toon, you're gonna love it!

"going to get an oversized cover and make a pvc support for storing in the yard to keep the rain off and quick on and off. I will store it inside in the winter at the dealership)."

I'm currently using a poly carport in the yard for storing right now, I think it came from Camping World, it's out of the wind and tied off to the boat trailer. Works fine so far, just have to remember not to let any snow build up on the roof. Looking at metal structures and pole barns in the future. 303 protectorant for your vinyl seats is the favorite too.

Are you going to trailer it, or do you have a slip?

here are some pics. the open one is not mine but exact color and layout.
Byden, thanks for the tip on the hoosier trailer. I asked around quite a few dealers around here and they all said hoosier was the best trailer for a pontoon. They also offer a galvanized version for an additional 500.00 maybe that is a better way to go? I have a karavan painted trailer for my bayliner and its looks brand new after 5 years. If I go painted I will sharkhide it as I plan to do the toons anyway.
Cleatus,
I plan to keep it at my house on a trailer, no slip. I only live 5 minutes from the lake. I have one of those shelter garages I keep my bayliner in. they work awesome and has held up to 6 years of northern Michigan winters. But the size of one I would need for the toon is huge and would be a too much right in front of my house. I looked at the metal carports. 28x12x10 would be 1600.00 not bad and may go that route down the road if the cover is a pain in the butt or doesn't work real good.

congrats and welcome.

your dealer should be able to get you dialed in with the right prop.

i can't tell because of the wrap, but now is a good time to have them install a ski tow pylon or bar if it isn't already there. on our 1st pontoon we had to clip the rope to the back of the pontoons. much easier with a ski tow bar.

don't forget your sharkhide.
