kicker / gas trolling motor?

#1 Post by Boatman » Sun Mar 24, 2013 1:04 pm

Just ordered a 2013 Sylvan 8520 20 foot, 4pt, with RPTs, tri-toon, with a 150 4stroke. We are thinking trolling motor and want it to work for more than 3 hours before plugging the boat in. We go fishing at a remote lake (Flaming Gorge, UT) we stay for a week and its just easier to find gas than a plug outlet.

Do we need a kicker? We are thinking a Pro 9.9 merc. With remote steering and throttle control.
Obviously the cheaper route is a trolling plate for 150 bucks.

Anyone rigged theirs up this way? Are there weight issues with the kicker would kill boat performance? Am I still going to be able to run 30+ @ 5000 feet above sea level?

What advice do you guys have on the topic?

If you take a generator with you you could plug it into that.
24v trolling motor should run all day and then charge over night, but I see where your coming from.
Some folks tow a small fishing boat behind to where they set up camp an use it for fishing and then the pontoon for water sports or cruising.

We use our 5L for trolling with our pontoon, we just engage it in forward at idle and it trolls just nicely.

Flaming Gorge = UT/WY border, right?
A calm day in Wyoming is only 50 MPH winds.

You may need that 150 HP to troll into the wind!
