needs to be replaced. To reach the anode, the prop bell housing must be removed. Has any one tried this? Or, should I have my etec service tech install it.

Replacing anode on Etec
The anode in my lower unit gearcase (2009 150 etec )
needs to be replaced. To reach the anode, the prop bell housing must be removed. Has any one tried this? Or, should I have my etec service tech install it.

Re: Replacing anode on Etec
Though unfamiliar with the Etec according to "this" article it sounds as if replacing anodes on your motor is actually quite an easy process:
4.Finally the finish coat.
In addition, sacrificial anodes (zincs) are added and their job is to deteriorate before any other metal components. They literally sacrifice themselves and are easily replaceable by the end-user. Lastly, all of the fittings are stainless steel, there's no nickel-plated steel anywhere in the engine. Walk up to a competitor's engine with a small magnet and count the number of fittings that you can get the magnet to cling to. Worse, in most cases these fittings are simply painted over.

Sacrificial zincs add to the anti-corrosion process on Evinrude E-TECs. Here's one just above the anti-ventilation plate. Another is behind the propeller in the bearing carrier, and still another is located underneath the swivel bracket. All are easily replaceable by the owner.

Re: Replacing anode on Etec
Thanks for the reply Bamby but that's not the one. This anode is behind the prop, inside
the gear housing. I'll take some pics tomorrow.

Re: Replacing anode on Etec
From E Tec forum
" Hi, there are no internal anodes like the Yamaha has. There are only three (3) anodes on the E-TEC and are located next to the trim/tilt unit near the bottom, there's one just above the AV plate and you can see it,the last one is fastened to the bearing carrier in the lower unit. Cann't get at this one unless you take the carrier out of the lower unit."

Re: Replacing anode on Etec
Yeah there is a bearing carrier anode (#36). Depends on how skilled/experienced you are as a tech, but you are opening the gearcase up. These service techs at marinas have done so many they could probably do it in their sleep.

It's visible if you remove the prop and shine a light inside the lower exhaust relief port.HandymanHerb wrote:So how did you know it was bad?????

Re: Replacing anode on Etec
BMR is correct. If you tilt the motor up, it's easy to see. My thought with this why evinrude would have a anode here. Everything else is pretty easy as far as maintenance.
