I would guess its a electric shift and those have gotten very hard to find parts for, how ever it is a good running motor. I would pass on it my self.

There are MANY "bargains" sitting in backyards all over.
Some things are just worth the extra money.

If it works for a good while, whatever a good while means to you, it is a good deal.
The age and parts availability is what scares me.
I you spend 500.00 and get a season or two out of it and that's ok with you then it is a good deal.
You just have to buy it knowing one season or ten out of it.
I've been in a similar situation where this may have been my only choice to upgrade, I have just been disappointing with my choice sometimes, that is why i am kinda warning you.

That running 9.9 very well could be better than a one season larger motor.

Good luck with what ever choice you make.

Price out a complete rebuild first and see if it still looks attractive. Offer $250 and see what happens.

I'll admit there is something to having a vintage motor. There is significant "cool factor" in it. But unless you are mechanical, resourceful, and got some extra money to spend routinely, it will not be something you will want to get into. It's much the same as owning a classic car or motorcycle.

If you aren't mechanically inclined, I'd say pass (I'm not and would pass).
If the cowling and everything is in good cosmetic condition it may have more value to a collector who's going to put it on a stand with other motors of the same or earlier vintage.

Manual shift normally means the shift handle is on the side of the motor....those old motors are good for a johnboat but I would pass if it doesn't have any sentimental value....would look pretty on a porch as an ornament or somethin'..... :donno
