I snagged a "cherry" 25ft bennington, but I need brakes!

#1 Post by fiddlebick » Thu May 16, 2013 4:20 pm

I found my "cherry condition" pontoon I have been looking for all spring, in a 25ft bennington 2005 model with a 135 Honda four stroke to match! I just pulled it home about 100 miles, very carefully on its Hustler tandem trailer. The trailer has 10" rims with no brakes, as the former owner only pulled it twice a year, to and from the slip. I am going to need brakes immediately, since I trailer up every trip out. This is a lot of boat behind my truck! I have been online looking, but it seems disc brakes are not available for this size wheel, and I haven't had any luck finding a surge drum brake kit for this either. Can anybody help me out that has this type of trailer and has added brakes? I need a complete kit, actuator, lines, and brakes, etc.. I need to order asap as I am eager to go boating...I haven't had a chance to get this thing on the water yet. Thanks.

See ChampionTrailers.com for brake kits--and everything else about trailers. Unfortunately, you'll have to probably put larger wheels/tires on your trailer to have room for brakes. There are other sources of trailer parts online, and the price is much better than I can get locally at a big trailer wholesale parts operation.

13" are the more popular tires (than 10".) If you go with brakes, go brakes on all 4 corners--not just on one axle.

I'm towing with a 3/4 ton diesel crew cab, and I'm towing just locally. The lakes in the front yard. I can easily get by without brakes.

....or you could buy a bigger truck. :nana :nana

Just kidding, Sorry I can't help. I don't even own a trailer.

I have brakes on my Loadrite trailer with 10" wheels. It came this way. I do a lot of business with a company called Nuera trailer parts. I know they can help you out with what you need to get brakes on yours. Google them and give em a call.

When I replaced my axles (SouthWest Axles) I bought them with electric brakes - and they fit my 10" wheels just fine.

Thanks for the help, my brother has surge drum brake setup on his ponton trailer, but it came from the factory that way. I am going to check out the links you suggested, in the meantime I may be able to contact Hustler trailers since that is my brand, and I know they sell them installed as an option on new trailers with 10" wheels. I really want to avoid going to the bigger wheel size. As for pics, it will be awhile, but I am going to post some in a week or so.

Fiddlebick... don't discount electric brakes.

I put electrics on my toon trailer for $400 total, with the controller. I kow for a fact that they had a 10" brake kit (7" brakes) when I purchased the brakes for my 13" wheels (10" brakes). This is my 3rd season with them, and they're still performing exactly like new.

First step, do you have the brake flange on the axle already?

If you go with electrics on some newer trucks you will have ABS on the trailer too.

You definitely can do disc surge brakes on 10" wheels my Shorelander trailer had them from the factory
I found this set of hubs/rotors/calipers I am sure there are others

And this surge actuator, again I am sure there are others

Thanks for the llinks Ray, I can't believe how helpful everyone is on this site. I will be ordering some brakes soon, and i can't wait to get the install done. I only wish I had a shop big enough to get my boat in here at the house. I am lucky that my brother built a shop last summer specifically to store our pontoons in, hows that for a great friend and brother.
