Leaving today for the weekend to Lake Ray Roberts

#1 Post by steveiam » Fri May 17, 2013 7:53 am

We are going to be gone till Sunday night to this lake I have never been on before.
A fishing forum I am a part of was contacted from a local VFW chapter that sponsors a "Take a soldier Fishing" event, in its third year.
They were especially interested in folks with pontoons because there will be several wounded warriors coming also.
I have never been a part of something like this before and am VERY excited at the chance to give these guys or gals a fun day on lake, and maybe catch a fish or two.
Looking at pics from previous events they even have chartered buses that come in from various bases to bring these soldiers in for the day.
We are just a small part of what this VFW chapter is doing, and I admire it.
They will have cookouts, three that day, a band and various other activities other than fishing just to show our thanks for them serving.
All they have to do is show up and everything else is taken care of.
I am not proud to say that I never served, but my son did 8 years in the Marines and I would have loved it for him to be able to enjoy something like this when he was stationed away from home.
I'm going to get out there this afternoon and scout it out and catch some bait for tomorrow.
I hope to have some pics coming of some smiling military folks that were able to enjoy a day on the lake on a Toon with and older guy and his wife that are glad they are there.

And I think its a good time to say "Thanks" again to you guys who served our country.
I often wonder if Jimmy really did crack corn, and why should I care?

Just got in a couple of hours ago, I'll write more about this tomorrow, I want to do this justice.

It was awesome, very humbling seeing current and former military being able to enjoy being appreciated a bit.

I was teamed with a 19 year ( Been in 19 years) soldier that is retiring next year that is based in Fort Hood in central Texas.
He had brought his wife and two sons with him and he was going to fish and come back and they were going to wait for him at the campground.
With the Toon and my wife's help we were able to take the whole family out and really enjoyed them.
Actually went back out with them after the event was over also.
Anyway, more tomorrow.
