Katie, get a telescoping hook. I got mine at BassPro and it seems to hold up fairly well so far.
Also, you might want to consider having cleats mounted fore & aft on both sides. It sure makes it easier to tie up (for me anyway).
You might want to also think about taking a boat safety course from the local USCG Auxiliary.

-got my hook at West Marine. Goes out to 9 feet
-Cleats are purchased, need to find a handy man to install them
-Im on section 2 of the online boat safety course with the DNR.
