Yes, take the valve stem core out to make the vent. The valve stem fits in a 1/2" hole. Just remove the stem cap to open the vent.

I have to give huge props to you guys for recommending the shaker hose. I ordered one Wednesday and it arrived on Friday. Yesterday I went to our local Tractor Supply Co. hoping to find a pair of 7-10 gallon gas tanks and a dolly. The plan was to fill both tanks and load them on a dolly to haul them down to my slip. Instead, I found a 14 gallon tank with a hose and "pump" and wheels! The hose is about worthless because my gas cap on the boat is higher than the dock, but I was able to lay the gas can flat, use the shaker hose and filled the boat up w/ 14 gallons of fuel in about 15-20 minutes. The BEST thing about it, gas at the grocery store was 3.44/gal compared to the 4.89/gal I paid at the marina last week!!! :thumbsup

Glad to hear the shaker hose worked out well for you. Its a great little gadget that everyone should have.

Filled mine on the lake last weekend. 5.25 per gallon. I don't like messing with 5 gallon cans...so guess what, you either take it out of the water or just pay the price.

I have thrown away all the filler tubes that come with the "new improved ecologically correct" gas cans and just have a large funnel I stick in the gas filler pipe. Every now and then a drip of gas sloshes out but that beats the several ounces which were spilled using the spill proof spouts invented by some pointed head in Washington.
The new "Scepter" brand gas cans all have those CARB (Yes - CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD) PIA (pain in the...) filler tubes on them. The 5 gal. cans sell for $16 in Wal-mart.. I'd heard about a gas pump handle looking siphon, and found the Moeller Flo n Go 08338 MaxFlo siphon pump on Amazon.com. It empties a 5 gal Scepter gas can in right at 2 minutes - it's made for the Scepter cans.

My gas tank filler is on the port side, so if I'm not tied up on that side, I simply set the 5 gal can up on the sun deck, pop open the filler cap, stick the gas pump handle siphon in the hole, pump it about 5 times and hold it open. In about two minutes, I change cans. I have a 25 gallon permanent fuel tank under the sun deck, and usually put 15 gallons at a time in it, never letting it get any lower than that (if I can help it....)

My gas tank is right in front of the engine. Can dock to either side. Pull up to the gas dock and they fill it standing inside the fence, not a drop spilled. Sweet.

How do you fill THAT. Can you take a picture? I had an idea like that too.

I was also thinking about a 100 gallon tank for my pickup bed but then I'd be driving on my lawn too much and it would take a lot of hose to reach the dock anyway. I wanted the 100 gallon bed tank for other reasons (filling generators and to have emergency fuel on hand) so this is not just all about the boat.

No ethanol unleaded here was $3.39 today when I passed by the station. Haven't been by the one marina
on the lake lately, so have no idea what they're charging for pre-mix no ethanol....might be about a monthly
house payment if my tank were about empty! Think I'll tote the 5 gal. cans down to the pier...
