Spare prop question
Howdy- we're currently running a Yamaha 3 blade Reliance Series stainless 14 1/2 " x 15 pitch prop on our Yammie 150HP motor, WOT @ 5600rpm. I need to buy a aluminum prop as a spare, what brand should I buy and where on line can I get a good price?
Thanks,
Robert

Re: Spare prop question
I went to the iBoats web site, they offer Stainless props like the current stainless prop I have a 14 1/2 " diameter 15 pitch but they don't offer aluminum props at 14 1/2 " diameter 15 pitch only SS and I need a aluminum, should I just go with a 15 " diameter 15 pitch?
my motor is a Yamaha 150HP currently running a 14 1/2" prop 15 pitch Stainless, WOT 5700 rpm.
Thanks,
Robert

Re: Spare prop question
Did you want an aluminum spare just because its cheaper?
Re: Spare prop question
Partly cause the Aluminum is cheaper and I'm getting electrolysis at my stern, ( I know sounds like a personal problem), during the non-freeze months I keep my motor /SS prop raised out of the water but during the winter freeze months I keep the motor in the water, and switching to a aluminum prop should cut down on the electrolysis,I'm already getting some pitting at one tune and corrosion on the drive.willy13 wrote:Did you want an aluminum spare just because its cheaper?

Re: Spare prop question
Electolysis is a problem I'm not familiar with. Do you think there's some problem with an electrical charge in the water? They have some problems around marinas with that. People have to be careful with their shore power and boat lifts.
I once had a polarity problem on my boat lift when my father spiced the white and black wires backward in error. When we came in at night, we could see sparks flying when the boat touched the cables. And dead fish were floating up.
Have you considered pulling the boat out of the water for 4-5 months of the year?

Re: Spare prop question
Ebay, why spend a lot for a spare? I have bought dozens from Ebay through the years. I paid $275.00 for a brand new Enertia last summer. Sold it for $475.00
I just toss on a bid and ride it out. If I win it, cool! If not, no biggy! I have made a lot of $ on the side from just buying and selling props. If you want, I can look for you and get ya lined up?
You may want to check your sacrificial anodes (now that sounds personal) and replace them if they look pitted up. Also, you want to make sure that they are in the water, when you lift the boat partially out. You can buy some and wire them to the boat through your EzFenders, and drop them into the water to function, as well.

Re: Spare prop question
Thanks guys.. we don't own a trailer so keeping the boat out of the water in the winter is not a real option, also since the center toon is 2 inches bigger than the outer toons I don't think we could keep it on blocks in the winter. I spoke with another boat owner at our marina, he said his Mercruiser outdrive got eat up with electrolysis so bad he had to replace the lower unit, the cause was his SS prop,he switched to a aluminum prop. When we had our boat pulled out in the spring to acid wash, the anodes were in good shape. The idea of wiring anodes to EZ fenders is a great idea! ... We're pulling our boat out Labor day week to change the oil and impeller,I'll ask the mechanic what his thoughts are about my pitting issues too.
Thanks,
Robert

Yes go with a 15 x15. Stainless is typically smaller diameter as they are stiffer, they give the same or better performance as a larger aluminum (in my experience anyway)robster wrote:I went to the iBoats web site, they offer Stainless props like the current stainless prop I have a 14 1/2 " diameter 15 pitch but they don't offer aluminum props at 14 1/2 " diameter 15 pitch only SS and I need a aluminum, should I just go with a 15 " diameter 15 pitch?
