A small puddle...

#1 Post by Rascal » Fri Dec 20, 2013 12:33 pm

I'm not to familiar with outboard motors. I've only had one before.
I just noticed my new 2012 Honda 115 left a small oil spot (6") on my concrete drive way after sitting for three days.

My last last boat had a 2006 Suzuki 115 and never left any oil spots in the same drive way.

I'm intending to take a shake down cruise Monday. Should I take it to a Honda dealer instead? :donno

Can you see where the oil is coming from? If you had it serviced (oil change etc.) then you might want to check the lower unit where the cover is for the drain plug. Might be leftover oil. Also under the cover by the oil filter.

Its coming right out of the center of the prop and dripping very slowly on the ground. My concern is, if oil can get out water can get in.

Get it to your dealer before you put it back in the water, it sounds like your prop shaft seal is leaking, and yes, if oil can get out, water can get in!

I agree, it could be a faulty seal, or a bent shaft (worst case), not sure how that could happen on a new engine.
find a Honda Marine dealer in your area and start a warranty claim.

The boat and the engine looks brand new. The salesman said it had only 5 hours. I believed him and still do. Its doesn't have a hour meter. Actual hours? The boat, toons and all, does not look like its ever been in the water. And The prop does not have one wear mark on it. It looks like a brand new prop. It may be. They might have hit something and put a new prop on it. My imagination is starting to run away....

I never saw the boat until it was delivered from WI, 1,400 miles from me in Ft Myers. The salesman said a young man bought it for his elderly father. They had one fishing trip in it and the father died. The boy dropped the boat off at the dealership to sell it and never returned in the year it took to sell it to even look at again.... Allegedly, he paid over 40K for it and put it up for sale two weeks later after dad died for 29k. he reduced it several times over the next 9 months to 25K. I saw a "just reduced" ad on the net and bought it for 23K with the trailer, trolling motor and ski bar. The boy went first class, Its loaded with about 10 +/- options including power steering. This is the short version. The bank was repossessing it at the end of my negotiations, The boy had to bring money to the closing (as I was told ). When I can figure how to post pictures, I will do so...

I will bring it back to my driveway and put ears on it, pull the prop and check for shaft run out with my dial indicator. I was hoping to do a shakedown cruise Monday. It may be going to the Honda dealer on Monday instead. I transferred the 5 year warrantee to my name just last week. Last boat I had, has a 2006 Suzuki and I never had one single problem with it in the year that I had it.

Feb 1, 2014 it goes to rack storage. They sell outboards. I wonder how much of a licking I would take on a trade for a new 150HO Evinrude with controls? Just kidding....
