Transom Replacement

#1 Post by ezrollin » Thu Feb 06, 2014 5:01 pm

The existing transom appears to be two 3/4" pieces of marine plywood inserted between the alum. with five bolts on each side holding it in place,I assume it's the original, it doesn't appear to have ever been painted or coated in any way. I have a partial sheet of marine plywood to make another, should it the two pieces be glued or will the five bolts each side be sufficient and should it be coated ?

We used a whole tube of liquid nails and 20 screws! pics are on pg 7 of my build. Make sure and use the old one for your bolt pattern so you don't put a screw in the way.

You'd want to use some kind of adhesive, and I assume construction adhesive would be as good as any. It also might be okay to coat it in epoxy or some way to "waterproof" the wood. But only marine plywood should be used--not Lowes/Home Depot plywood.

Thanks Guys, I was lucky to find a half sheet of 3/4" of marine plywood for $30,so I didn't have to buy a whole sheet . Ok, sound like a water proof construction glue and a good coat of sealer will do the trick. My transom looks like the one in your picture.

I didn't put any coating on mine, but it only sees 50-75 hours on the water a season. Once I had the old one off I set it on the new one and used a sharpie to mark the holes where the mount was as seen in this pic. I put screws everywhere but where the sharpie marks were.

Good luck!

Screwed, glued and clamped but still needs several coats of urethane to seal it. For about $50 including carriage bolts l'll have a like new transom.
