Help needed with Remote control box

#1 Post by ezrollin » Wed Mar 12, 2014 4:36 pm

I have a Suzuki top mount remote control box [nos] 710 S. Pretty straight forward install but when I operate it only the throttle cable moves,it's not connected to the motor.. I took it apart to see if what was causing the problem and couldn't find any apparent reason. While moving the control lever with side cover off I notice no movement from the shift arm assy.

Was the button on the side of the lever pushed in? That will disconnect the shifter.

Yes, I'm depressing the lock button and the level moves the throttle arm but the shift arm is not being engaged for some reason. I found a parts break down diagram and will check it out later today. I have opened the box up for inspection and it doesn't seem overly complicated and saw no broken parts so far.

Maybe I'm mis-reading it but if you press in the button, it will disengage the gear shift mechanism.

I had issues on my brand new Merc unit not engaging reverse and I ended up stripping it apart (Purchased in the US and a 7hr drive so it wasn't worth going back to the dealer). The unit would work fine when opened up and right in front of me until I put some tension back on the shifter linkage and then it still seemed to be like the button was pressed - even though the button was out.... My solution was to remove the side button entirely and this cured the issue. No issues for the rest of the season.

Yes, pressing the button disengages the shift cable.

Happy to report that after about the sixth assembly it is working, don't know if it was frozen from sitting in the garage for about a year or if it had gotten a small piece of foreign matter in it.Good thing is that I know it inside and out for future reference.
