Bottom Paint Barnegat Bay NJ

#1 Post by Four R's » Sat Mar 22, 2014 4:42 pm

Preparing for my 2nd year in the salt water. Dealer did the original bottom painting last year. This year I will be doing the painting. Once again, my boat will sit in the water from May thru September. Is there a preference between Pacifica Plus and Trilux 33? How many coats and what type of prep prior to painting (sanding)?
Thanks,
Four R's

Can't help you on the paint choice, but while I was workg at a marina in Brielle NJ we used to power wash and then tape off the waterline, then paint. Never had a problem.

If it was already painted it's always a good idea to use the same brand. Trilux is great, very durable. If the paint is in good shape, just a coat will do. Any spots where the paint and primer are showing through to metal, primer those spots. Never put bottom paint on aluminum without primer first.

Powerwash thoroughly before painting, whatever your choice, Interlux recommends a light sanding (80 grit) and wipe down with 216 solvent, the sanding helps adhesion.
Our boat is wet slipped and I got two seasons out of the Pacifica Plus, and I'll be repainting for this upcoming summer, I put on 2 coats.
I used Trilux on outdrives in the past with good results, thought I'd try the Pacifica on the logs.

.

btw,
Interlux is currently offering a $10 rebate on the pacifica.
