This came from Apex Marine:

The Aluminum wedge piece is called a motor mount. This is a critical piece in supporting the weight and protecting the engine. When in motion the motor mount diverts water away from the main body of the engine allowing only the prop and drive section to be in the water. The mount is left open so water will flow out when you take off.

Personally, I use that as a cooling water reservoir for my raccoon-tracking laser cannon.

If you'll check page 17, section 2, paragraph 3, of your owner's manual, you'll discover it is the place to store your wheel chucks while towing and while underway.

That way, they stay with the trailer/boat, and get washed each time you put into the lake....

Also... that's where I'm going to put my water intake pipe, when I install my water pump... <post coming soon>

Ew! I get nasty stuff in there - I don't think I'd want to do that! Plus, when you're moving fast, it goes empty.
