Trailer license stolen last week at the boat ramp
Well, the other day I had my trailer plates stolen at the boat ramp. I have since replaced my plate. But now I am afraid to leave my license plate on the trailer while we are on the boat.
Anybody have any ideas on ways to make it so that I can put the plate on the trailer only while we are on the road and then easily take it off while at the lake?

Use stainless steel bolts and wing nuts, they'll come right off easily and won't rust. On my trailer, I have tamper proof bolts, but vise grips can easily remove them if someone really wanted my tag.

I found catching the thief then tying them to the rear bunk before loading the boat corrects the issue.if they want the plate they will get it you just. Have to decide how much you want to slow them down. One of my friends mounts his with bolts that have been drilled for pins so it will slow the thief down a second so hopefully they move to someone easier.

Back when I was (much) younger and not afraid of "what ifs" and liability. I bought a model T coil and wired it too my hot rod 1930 Ford coupe, with a rubber incased kill switch hidden in the grill. If any body touched a piece of metal on my car. They would get a big enough 'JOLT" to straighten their legs right out from under their body and stand their hair on end. Hitch hikers wearing Dixie Beach hair cream and due rags got a surprise when motioned over to the car for a ride. "What's Happening... Bro"
I was a rascal, growing up in the inner city of Detroit in the 50's. Now I'm not saying you should research how to hook up this system and I'm not telling you the coils can be bought from J.C. Whitney the last time I looked... But this might really straighten out some crook
Kind regards,
Rascal.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts. I haven't made up my mind yet. But I do think I will put the plate on and off each time I go to the lake.

I have seen plates attached to the back of the pontoon, with a battery operated light for when you're driving at night. I have been more concerned about trailer, itself.

Here Texas boat trailer tags for my toon is over $57. I keep the trailer locked to the hitch and I keep the spare locked to the trailer with a cable and lock.

One in a million event. I wouldn't even bother with it. Chances are that the thief uses that launch and will be back. Keep your eyes open for your tags and take action if you see it. You've got enough to worry about. This shouldn't be on your mind.
What's the tag number? I'm in Shreveport and launch anywhere from Minden to Carthage and beyond. I notice stuff sometimes.

Re: Trailer license stolen last week at the boat ramp
Sorry, but there's just a bunch if pos's running around. I came up to retrieve my pu and trailer a few years ago to find some pos stole my 4 way to 7 way round trailer plug adpt. Really fun to drive home at dusk without trailer lights. Last week I was in a small rural town NW of Seattle checking emails in front of a small full service grocery store (not a mini mart) I was at the edge of the fairly large parking lot when a guy parked a row in front of me in a flat bed service truck. About 5 mins I noticed 2 kids pull up in a diesel pickup and rolled by real slow checking out what was in the back of the truck. It was so obvious I started to write down a plate number. They drove off, 5 mins later pulled into the lot stopped in back of the truck, passenger jumped out a STOLE a chain saw. This is about 2 in the afternoon! I called 911, but I can tell you these days I'm not chasing down a couple punks for anything unless my own life is in danger

Re: Trailer license stolen last week at the boat ramp
I also live in Texas and had a tag stolen. I went to the county and told them what happened. The girl told me "No problem what is the tag number" I don't know, "well you can't get a replacement tag unless I have the number. Can't you look it up? "no we can't" I had to go back where I bought the trailer, get a recipt and then the county made me pay the sales tax on it again plus pay for the tag. I needed it so I did it. Now here is the kicker, two months later they sent me a renewal notice on the lost tag. So just to be a shit I renewed it and bought a replacement tag. The next time I renewed the tags I took both the notices to the county and the girl about went nuts when she found out I had two tags for the same trailer. I told her it was their fault and I wanted my tags. Then some other lady came and asked me why I wanted two tags for one trailer and I told her it wasn't any of her business what I did with it. Then things went really wild and I told her since they wern't interested the year before I was not interested in bringing in the tag so they could destroy it. Damn what fun.

I hope you reported it stolen. If not, do so. They have license plate readers everywhere now. Let that baby pop stolen while a trooper is making his rounds through parking lots!

Re: Trailer license stolen last week at the boat ramp
I'm not sure if our system is any better now or not. This happened about 3 years ago. Now that I've got started on my "I hate the Tag People" rant. I have a small trailer that I pull with my motorcycle, it folds out with a pop up tent on top. It weighs 264 lbs. The state charges me the same amount for it as you would have to pay for a 40 foot 10,000 lbs trailer because they only have one rate for what they call a "Travel Trailer" Just thought I would throw that in there so people whould have some idea why I gave the tag people a bit of pay back. If you buy an old car for $200.00 and they look in their magic book and decide it is worth $500.00 you are going to pay tax on the $500.00. Every time a vehicle changes ownership, they tax it again.
