SS vs Aluminum prop

#1 Post by Bullman » Sat May 24, 2014 5:59 am

Sorry for another prop question from the new guy.
Short version:
My dealers are virtually no help with this.
As my lake drops, only fools or the very wealthy don't run aluminum.
My 2250 GSR, SPS, 150 YAMAHA runs comfortably at 5800 RPM and achieves 38ish MPH.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what might give me similar numbers?
I really don't want to pull my boat out, drive an hr to pay 100.00/hr to have a someone play musical props..
Thanks in advance for any insight
Al

What prop do you have including size and pitch?

If the water is dropping that fast and people are smackin props, I guess I'ld be leary of taking a chance. If you do, buy one with a rubber hub. They will slip enough if you do hit something hard, that it may save you from a broken vertical shaft. The hard Nytril hubs don't give a lot. They will break away, but whats gonna break first, the hub or one of the shafts?
If our heart is set on one. Buy one the same size as your aluminum to start with and spin it. I buy all of my "boughten" props from GreatLakesSkipper" on Ebay. Just bought a brand new 15 3/4 X 17 Mirage Plus for $175.00. At last count I had 7 for the Verado. I have 3 to run next week. The ones I don't keep, I toss on BBC and sell for more $.
Good luck with it!

Just stick with the same pitch and Dia as you have now

Agree with same spec. prop in aluminum if it works well now.

You may want to consider a second prop sized differently. My primary prop is sized for speed (light load) and the second prop is sized for greater load. Just something to think about.

After a great deal of discussion, one of our top Yamaha dealers handed me a 15.5 x 15 to try
