Need advice on GPS, Depth Finder and a bunch of accessories

#1 Post by Douglas4315 » Mon Jun 09, 2014 12:54 pm

Hi everyone!

First weekend out on the new Pontoon and it was an absolute blast! Should have done this years ago!

Anyway the boat did not come with a depth finder so it's interesting trying to get into low depth coves. Can anyone recommend a decent depth finder? We will not be using it for fishing more just depth and water temperature.

On another note what about a GPS? We are on an 8 mile lake, do I really need it or is it just to track speed?

Lastly, what other accessories should be be thinking about? All set with fenders, jackets, towable tube and kneeboard. Anything else?

Don't bother spending your money on a GPS. If you get lost on a lake that size, maybe you need another form of recreation (lol!). I have a Garmin 250, but you can find cheaper. Don't be talked into color; you don't need it.

As far as a GPS, if you have a decent smart phone, just spend $10 on a Navionics app. That what we did and it works great to know the channel location and where I am on the lake. Just make sure your lake is listed on the app.

I use a Humminbird 798ci HD. It's a bit of overkill but I like the large screen and it's great for fishing. Also shows your track so you can navigate at night. My lake is not large either but there is a lot of rocks and shallow areas that aren't marked very well.

My boat came with a garmin 421....it is over kill
And yes, some apps on my phone give much greater detail.
For me, the biggest benifit is the bread crumbs....I am on a lake where 1 meter can make the difference as to whether you keep your low end. I mostly use it for midnight cruises. ...

I agree with Bullman. The breadcrumbs.

The main use I have for my GPS (It's a garmin of some sort I think, fishfinder, water temp, GPS etc) is tracking my speed.

Most important use is when I get caught on the lake at night. I can follow my own trail back to the dock and know that I won't run into the shore or anything else (even then I keep my speed below 10mph after dark). Sometimes the shore and the water look the same.
