Under deck rod storage

#1 Post by Ezgoing » Fri Jun 13, 2014 7:54 pm

I am thinking it would be nice to have under deck fishing rod storage on my pontoon as I had on my crappie boat.

Has anybody done this on a pontoon? Is it possible to have a box placed under the deck of a pontoon for rods?

Are these sold commercially? So you could order the box and have the dealer install it?

Any suggestions will be welcome.

All you have to do is add a third toon or cut out the cross members.

I would not want to cut cross beams. I was thinking that the storage boxes could be across the width of the pontoon, since it is 9' wide. I guess I need to measure to see how much width I have between the logs.

I was hoping there would be commercial source for rod boxes for pontoons. That way I could buy the box and mounting gear and have the dealer make the cuts in the deck to install it. But I have not been able to find any by searching so maybe they don't exist commercially.

You can put a box sideways and get seven foot easy, the only problem will be from bow splash and extra water drag, under skinning to stop water from hitting cross members adds a few mph

I was actually thinking about this a few weeks ago.
Why couldn't you use 3" PVC pipe available at Lowes, Home Depot, etc?
Put a cap on one end and a clean-out on the other end.
Then mount it front to back, next to one of the pontoons, under the deck. You could get your rods, etc. by laying on the front of the pontoon boat and reaching underneath.

That would work and is a good idea.

I was looking for a solution that would be easier on these old bones. :biggrin2

I had hoped that somebody made commercial boxes that I could buy and have installed. You see them on all the bass boats so somebody is making them. Unless each boat manufacturer just builds them into the hull as part of the boat building process.

That's what the P/O of my toon did. Except he is using it to store his flags.

It is a good idea, especially for storage between fishing trips.

As I stated, I was hoping to find a way to cut into the deck and install a storage box for the rods.

I had hoped to find a commercial solution since it would be hard to keep the water out of the storage area if you built the box yourself.

I may go to some of the welding shops in the area and see if any of them could build a waterproof box for me. It would need to be build from a rust proof material, which might be hard for them to do.

One build from plastic would be great if I can find one that big.

I am recovering from a broken foot right now. As soon as the doctor allows me to walk (place weight on the broken foot) I will start searching the container stores and talk to welding shops about it.

Check with Tracker Marine. My 2010 Fishing Barge 21 has the rod storage box to the starboard of the helm. It lays on deck between console and rear gate and is mounted against starboard fence. It's made of roto-molded plastic and has a door with keyed lock. I'm sure you can purchase a replacement from Tracker Marine/Suntracker Parts.

Here's their number.....
