Scottish Terriers First Ride On The Boat

#1 Post by Marijeaux » Fri Jun 27, 2014 10:58 am

We have a Sun Tracker 20 Fishing Barge. Does anyone know if there is a good dog barrier we can put up over the half gate where the trolling motor goes? Before we ever got under way this morning our wheaten Scottish Terrier jumped off the front of the boat at about 150 yards from shore. Luckily both our dogs had on their Float Coats and he was able to swim to shore. Most Scotties swim like concrete blocks due to short little legs and big blocky heads. After that little adventure, we had a good morning out but had to keep the boys away from the front of the boat. I also want to keep them on the boat for other reasons....gators. We live in Florida. Dogs are a tasty snack for them.

I have seen people that roll up towels or put a pillow in there for this very reason.

We have a solid front gate so we like to leave it open to get more air back through the boat. I am going to take some plastic fencing and add snaps to the outside of the rails and to the fencing. That way we can keep our water-hating lab from accidently falling over when he likes to go to the bow of the boat to feel the wind in his face.

My front gate was missing when I bought the boat. I used, http://www.cascadenets.com/barrier_netting.php , to order a custom size net. Good prices. I attached with snaps like this, http://www.sea-dog.com/groups/1456-swivel-eye-bolt-snap , with ty-wraps to each corner.

Check Jeep Wrangler after-market accessories. They have perfectly sized web thing you can stretch across the opening. We have same issue, goes right over the trolling motor. Easy to hook/unhook.
