opinion on trim plate/anti ventilation plate

so we got the toon in the water again this week to test the new prop setup, and whether we had fixed a leak in the starboard toon.

new prop is much better, 15 inch 11 pitch, the motor almost got to 4500 rpms, which is much closer to top end on the i/o

the boat as she sits is running 20-21 mph on gps. oh and the leak is also fixed

so now that we have a baseline and a prop that is close, i am looking at making improvements as we go along.

first a better 11 pitch prop. the 15 pitch we had before was just way too much prop at my altitude.

second or maybe first what is your opinion on this POS anti vent/trim plate the PO installed?


it is hard to tell in the photo but is actually bends down slightly in the front edge. seems as i trim up a bit to raise the log it would actually dig in and cause drag rather than helping at all. when we are trimmed the tailing end are out of the water about an inch.
I have used these on other boats, but on the toon it just seems like a point of resistance.
what do you think?

I took it off with the intention of reshaping it and getting rid of the leading edge and making it drag less. now that it is off i am thinking i may be better off without it.

I would try it with our see how it works. I agree with you manor drag maybe a factory made one might be better. Most people that put them on toons do it because they have allot of ventilation or prop blow out. Woody car scenario you have to put one back on.

I must say someone went to a lot of work making that! That one actually looks pretty good! Same principle of the Doel fins, Sting Ray fins, the Whale tail. Supposed to give you more stern lift, hole shot and more speed. I agree with the stern lift, I ran them on my old O/B Checkmate and Forrester Phantom. They did raise the stern, but slowed the boats down a few mph and even made the Forrester dig in on corners. I took them off, and haven't run them on any boats since.
But that one you have, does look pretty nice!

All those you mentioned only fit the trailing end of the plate. Those I get, but this one is so huge and sits out in front of the motor so far it seems it is counterproductive. I marked it for a redesign prior to taking it off. The new shape would make it only fit on the back half of the plate.

also the factory ones usually have the solid portion over the prop, this one is open over the prop, seems if the purpose of the anti-ventilation plate is to keep the prop from sucking air then having it open over the prop is again counterproductive.
