I broke down Memorial Day--had to be towed in. Thought it was ethanol but was a defective kill switch. It didn't come off but over the yrs the clip had weakened till the switch shut engine down even tho it looked like it was hooked up. Try bypassing the switch--wire direct.

Sounds good that thing is an outboard electronics bible! I suggest everyone that reads this thread save that link in their favorites. It took me forever to find it when I was having my issues but once I did, what a savior! :nana

OK, I gave up and got help, mechanic was backed up , it's summer, but he put a test harness on it and in 15 seconds told me it was the stator, now get the hell out of his parking lot, need to catch him when it gets cold and have go through it once, glad he pointed us the what to buy.

The guy we bought off of don't even know what year it is, the paperwork said a 2000 model, but did he just make it up, so we may have to order two parts and send one back.

Herb find the serial number and I can find you the right stator number.

I don't remember where the number is though. I actually got the title to mine 6 years ago so I have never had to look for the number on the actual motor itself. You can replace the stator yourself. IF I can do it I know you can.

x2!

Glad you have a promising lead to figuring it out, Herb. A stator is a PITA compared to a kill switch, but it's still better than an electrical gremlin that's near impossible to find.

you may get lucky all merc parts have the part number on the wiring or on the stator itself.

Ok it's not the stator and now we ordered a voltage regular, Why didn't someone tell me to stay the hell away from Merc, why don't people working on them know what wrong without replacing every part on it, till you find it

I hate em.......know too many people that have had lots of trouble out of those damned Mercs.
Sucks because back in the day, Merc was the king of the water. Bulletproof . Still remember a 115 tower of power I had . Motor was a screaming devil child.....

Had to replace the voltage regulator/rectifier on my Yamaha soon after we got our "new to us" pontoon. Nav light wire through bimini frame got pinched in the frame and rubbed through the coating on the wires. When I opened the bimini and tried to turn on the Nav light, the wire grounded out on the bimini frame and fried the regulator/rectifier. I started getting a "high voltage" message on depth finder soon afterwards -- that's how I knew we had a problem.
