Prop pitch or engine proformance ?

#1 Post by FAT BOTTOM GIRL » Mon Aug 11, 2014 6:09 am

Is this prop to much pitch or do ya think I need to check over the engine ?
Bought a 1993 16ft sun bird open bow with a 90hp Johnson outboard.
Engine revs up good in neutral but when put in gear seems to b a dog & takes a bit to get up on plane & wind out ?

I used to have pretty well that same boat before I blew up the motor. Mine was a 1991 Sunbird 160 with a 2000 Johnson 90. Pretty sure it had a 15 pitch prop (you have a 17) and mine launched out of the water like a raped ape and did 44 mph on GPS. However, it would over-rev at full throttle so a 17 should have made it slower out of the hole and quicker at top end.

That said, from the way you describe your performance it sounds like you may have some gummed up carbs that need cleaning. (And clean them ASAP before you melt a piston).

What's your top speed?

Boat speedos seem to typically read a bit faster than you're actually going. And if that's the case, I especially think you've got some motor problems or you left the boat trailer attached. ;)

Will fuel additives work or do I have to get carbs rebuilt ?

You wouldn't necessarily have to rebuild them (though rebuilding isn't a big deal anyway), but if the main jets are plugged up so bad with "green death" (wax from old fuel) then Seafoam or the like won't work and they'll have to be removed and cleaned properly.

If you just bought the boat and don't know the maintenance history, and the engine has good compression, then rebuilding the carbs is probably a good idea. Especially if they're already out for cleaning. Carb kits aren't really expensive. Rebuilding is just changing o-rings, gaskets and sometimes needles and jets.

Also, while you're at it, some people like to remove the oil injection systems on older motors. The VRO system is quite reliable, but they do fail on occasion. I suspect that's what killed mine - a broken oil line or something that took out one cylinder and exploded chunks of aluminum all over. The sad part is, like you, I had just bought the boat two weeks earlier and was planning on doing it after summer. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance.
