I have always used beer, also, for steaming and I don't even drink.

The only time I do drink a beer or two is when I'm having steamed crabs :drool

Although this thread seems to be getting off topic...I have to ask: Can I see your set up? I'm set up to deep fry / boil on my back porch, and we LOVE to do low boils (was actually going to do one this weekend!). Might have to try this steaming you speak of :drool

I use my 30qt boiling pot with straining basket. I just added some 3" SS bolts and nuts to the bottom strainer basket to make it stand off the bottom of the stock pot. Then just put in a couple of inches of water (gonna have to try this beer idea though). It makes a great steamer setup.

I like the idea of the SS bolts to keep it up. :thumbsup Yea the beer thing will have to be tried, I have a beer limit of two per event so maybe I can use the others for steaming.

Hmmm....me thinks I had a blond moment. I have a big stock pot with the top "ring"...but now that I think about it I bought an extra deep basket so I could do big shrimp boils. I'll have to look and see if I have the original basket that stops on the ring and allows for steaming.

We typically do red potatoes, sausage, corn, shrimp, and crab legs or snow crab claw in one big batch...just add ingredients associated by their cooking times. I'll have to look into steam cooking a bit and see if I can get a big pot timed out correctly...
