HELP! (plastic plug on top of toon broke off)

#1 Post by Whitehorse » Sat Aug 23, 2014 12:50 pm

Heard a bit of water sloshing in the front right toon chamber. Spent a while trying to get at the small red plastic plug in the top of the toon, finally got a hold of it and took it out. Lowered some tubing down in to see if there was enough water to siphon out but couldn't get any. Lowered a string straight down to the bottom and that came up dry, so I guess there isn't that much in there and its all up towards the front. The pontoon doesn't sit uneven in the water, but if I could I wanted to get the water out.

Then.... Time to put the plug back in. Barely started to tighten it and the top broke right off with the threading still in the hole. :x

Any ideas on the best way to get the plastic out, or how to proceed from here? I've seen some people heated up the plastic to the point they could wipe it out, some others just plugged up the top and left the plastic in.

Oh, it's on a 2001 suntracker 21 party barge.

Wally world carries a set of ez outs for getting stripped screws out. That should work.

The "screw" part of the plug is hollow, and the top is flush with the pontoon now. Would what you suggested still work?

Heat a screw driver up and melt it in, let it harden and screw it out

Got it out! Used a knife and some needlenose. Hardest part was finding a knife short enough to get in there. Knife has seen better days now...

What should I get for a replacement? More plastic? Aluminum? Vented or no?

Plastic or alum for use in alum; do not use steel or brass.... No vent; if air has no excape path water has a harder time getting in...
