How Was Your Labor Day Weekend?

#1 Post by BoatCop » Mon Sep 01, 2014 6:43 pm

I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the water. Not on the toon, but on the workboat.

Very uneventful weekend on my neck of the River. No major incidents and everyone behaving themselves. When I can go 3 days and not write a single ticket, you know it's a mellow weekend.

What's even more significant is that this was the last holiday weekend I'll have to patrol. Between my Coast Guard time and current position, almost 40 years of working every summer holiday weekend on the water in one way or another, I'll be retiring next May and saying goodbye to the badge on the boat business. So next your I'll start being part of the problem, rather than part of the solution. :fyou

Talked to a guy and his family on a brandy new Bennington 24' tri-toon with a 300 Verado. I just had to stop and drool over this beautiful boat. Turns out he was a retired California Cop and his wife a current PD Detective. If that's what I have to look forward to in retirement, bring it on! :dance

Went out on the Neches River today with wife one son and two daughters and a grandson. We went to Bessie Heights and did a little red fishing and got a few slots and a bunch of not ready for prime time. The girls totally enjoyed the fishing and so did the grandson. I on the other hand was the charter captain and baited hooks and removed fish. WAS NOT A SURPRISE. ITS they way it is. Then we went to a sandbar and burnt some meat and swam. It was good and all enjoyed the Day.

The boat performed well, and I am continually happy that I went thru the rebuild. It was worth the effort.

I agree with "old jim"....I don't go boating on holiday weekends, even though we live on the lake.
We spent Thursday until Monday camping in Pennsylvania with 10 friends from 3 states that get together 2-3 times a year. Had a blast in the woods with no noise and no one else around.
Tomorrow, all the weekenders here at Smith Mtn Lake will be gone and it will be peaceful until next Memorial Day.

Normally I have to work most holidays... but for some unknown reason I got the day off... when I saw the schedule last week I thought... boating, boating, boating.... but didn't happen... wife informed me that she had asked the kids if we could have Cooper ( our only grandchild ) for the weekend... they said sure....so I played with Cooper for three days... the boy just will not stop.. keeps going, going and going... how an 18 month old has this much energy is beyond me...he wore me out.. but I'd do it again in a heartbeat... Grandma caught her boys taking a little siesta yesterday!

We went out early on Sunday, but it was entirely too windy this weekend.

I didn't know it at the time, but I was fighting some kind of sickness. I was fatigued and very cranky. It hit me hard last night though.

We had a great time this weekend. We went to one of the popular sand bars on Saturday and hung out most of the afternoon with friends. But storm clouds rolled in and I could see rain coming when I looked at radar on my phone. Since we don't move too fast across the water, I decided we better start making our way back towards our dock since it takes 30 minutes on a good day. We only ran into a couple of sprinkles but we could see lightning back towards where we were headed. But due to our slow speed on the water, the storms had time to move off to the East before we got there. Sunday we just swam off our dock all day and watched more mishaps at the boat ramp next to us -- it's amazing how many people can't back a trailer straight - our ramp is narrow with an 8-10" drop off the sides and we saw several trailers getting dropped off and then drug back up till they could get the tires on the ramp again. Monday we went back to the sand bar - not nearly as many people out today. We saw lots of people already loading up before we left the dock. We only stayed at the sand bar for a couple of hours then we had to head back and start closing things up before we headed home. Overall, it was a great holiday weekend with lots of time in the sun.

We were out pretty much all weekend, except for a few dumbasses at the ramp it was a beautiful weekend. Hot temps here, water temp is 79. Found a crystal arrow head on the beach last weekend, had Ethan looking for more.

Roger that. Too many nut cases out there on the holidays. I like the week days, pretty much have the lake to ourselves other than a few locals that usually think the same way.

That is way cool BMR, Yep the boat ramps can be entertaining, mix alcohol, incompetence, and a dash of stupidity and you get at least a Charlie foxtrot stirred not shaken. :drink :thumbsup

Wife and I took off work Friday and took my pontoon out to local lake Piedmont Ohio and the dock they gave me was first one out. After two days of of fun with grandkids and wife I was backing out of dock and the wind put my side into metal on dock. Now I have a deep gouge in the side about 16 inches. Don't they make like a guard you glue onto the length of toon like they have on a lot of car side?
