Used Prop's

A buddy of mine has a used stainless steel three blade prop. I have no idea what pitch or anything like that, nor do I know how to figure that out. Anyway, he's pretty sure it will fit my motor and offered to sell it to me for $150.00. He already gave it to me to try out and see if I like it. My question is, is $150 a good price for a used prop, assuming that it fits?

Depends on what it is. He can't be much of a buddy if he's gonna charge you for it.

Not unless you know what you are buying. Unlikely it will "bolt on". Unlikely it is the right prop for your boat, w/o know ing what you have and what you need.

Save your $$ and but they correct prop for your boat.

Any prop shop can tell you what it is.
Question
1 -has the hub ever been spun.
2 what do the flukes look like
3, what splines does it have/ you have, Props don't always interchange motor to motor.

If its good the price is right a new one will cost upwards of 3 to 400 clams.

Now take that and 2.00 and buy some coffee or sumpn.

Run the numbers on the prop through your search engine. There should be some part number on it, somewhere. If it fits and works? Ya, its probably worth it. I'ld dig into it a little deeper though. Compare prices on EBay.

Ok, the prop fits, it slid on very easy. I haven't tried it in the water yet but it spins as good as the the one that was already on it. The only number that I can find is 15 printed on the lower unit side of the prop. I still plan to try it out before I pay him for it. The blades look like they are in good shape, they have a few nicks and dings but nothing that I would consider serious. I'll have to ask if he knows if it was ever spun or not. I think this was his spare prop and he got a 4 blade to use as a spare instead. If I can figure out how to post pictures I'll put some up tomorrow.

Hope you've got the power to push a 15 pitch prop. That's what I'm running on a Yamaha F150 on a 24' Bennington triton.

I tried uploading pictures, but apparently they are too big. I'll try to resize and post them later. The motor is a 90 Johnson, hopefully that's enough to push the 15 pitch. I'm pretty ignorant of prop pitch and what the differences are. I'll have to look at the aluminum prop and see what the pitch is on that one.

Hey Tank.

If you don't know what the prop pitch is , its not that important until you have a chance to run it.
The prop should allow the motor to turn to its max RPM at WOT.
If your motor is suppose to turn 5400 rpms at top speed and the number are off a couple of hundred, thats ok. Couple of hundred ain't going to brake the bank but When you start getting into the 3 and 400 rpm difference it means a lot of performance difference than having the right pitch on there. Just watch your tech at WOT and you can get a right good idea if the prop is close to what you really want back there.
