Moving a carport
Its been a busy summer, I bought a house awhile back so its cut into my boating time although the boat is running fine. But any way on the new property is a very nice 12 x 24 x 12 carport and i wanted to move it to store my boat during the winter. So the first step was to pull out the 12, 2 foot pins holding it to the ground, i did that by using a 1 ton chain ratchet, the next step was to jack it up using a floor jack then blocking up and putting 2, 16 foot posts under it to act as a skid, and after bolting it to the posts i will drag it about 30 feet with my truck, then move the posts around then drag it into its final place. I will get a few pictures tomorrow.

Re: Moving a carport
Sounds like a plan!
They don't have tractors in W Virginia? That sounds like a lot of work. Wish I was closer I could bring my Kubota and pull the stakes and drag the carport.
I'm sure your plan will work, just wish I could help.

Sure lots of tractors around out in the country, i am smack in the middle of a small town, but my truck is a silverado 4 wh drive so i doubt it will even notice its dragging any thing lol. As best i can find out the carport is only 600 to 800 pounds.

I'd love to help you if I could, but the best I can do is grab a lawn chair, a couple beers, and my iPad and enjoy your pictures.
I hope your move goes well.

No doubt the truck will drag it! I was thinking more of pulling those stakes, but I'm sure you are no stranger to hard work.MH Hawker wrote:Sure lots of tractors around out in the country, i am smack in the middle of a small town, but my truck is a silverado 4 wh drive so i doubt it will even notice its dragging any thing lol. Re: Moving a carport
Ok i am recovering today but its 95 % done. The full story behind this is, I bought a house in July this year and one of the many projects was to set up a existing carport for winter boat storage
this is what i started with, the back yard was a good bit of prep work including dropping and sawing up a 60 foot pine tree and removing 2. 8 foot sections of fence then jacking up and moving the carport. This is a first for my in 30 plus years of owning a boat the first ever covered shortage, my boat is at the marina right now but come November it will have a nice place to sit.
I still need to put the stakes in and spread gravel
and put up gates and fencing and and and.

Re: Moving a carport
Great job on moving the carport. That will do perfect to cover your boat in the winter. That's still on my "to do" list one of these years.

Re: Moving a carport
I'm planning on moving my carport over to the lot I own next to our house. Plans are to build a stick built carport. I'll do the same, but drag it over with the Max. I've moved boats with it without problems, even drag trees with it

Re: Moving a carport
I had a 22x26 car port with all sides and back put up last year for almost 3 grand for my 2012 sun tracker. The tongue of trailer sticks out about one foot. I have my new truck parked in it also. I found it was cheaper and quicker than building a garage. Now I bought my wife a new Buick and she was kicking me out of car port for her car . I had the same people put up a 12x21 foot car port for her car last week for 650.00. Six foot poles with no sides or ends and now she's happy. So much quicker and cheaper than lumber. I dug down and used rebar drove in on angles and used long foundation anchors and a 80 pound bag of cement on all corners. The company is out of South Carolina and they travel to different states ounce they get a few orders in. Very pleased. Steel buildings and structures LLC 888-497-8335

Re: Moving a carport
Problem with Carolina and similar carports though, they can't handle much snow load at all. Mine got buckled badly when we had a storm with 22 inches in 2010. It buckled slightly last year with only 11 inches on it. Carolina and Carports.com don't back up their products, lie (in my case I was told it could handle "New England winters"), BS. When I asked about the "40 year" warranty they said it was only for rust through. I'm going lumber so the damn thing doesn't collapse. It was also out of square, something I had to fix myself as they would not come out to fix their mistakes.
