Bottom paint. How to tell if it's the right kind?
My friend bought a used pontoon boat and when he got the boat, the bottom was already bottom painted but he's not sure he trusts the guy he bought it from as he's found a lot of poor workmanship on his boat. Is there any way to tell if he used a non copper based paint and what can he do about it if he used the wrong stuff?

While if it is not aluminum paint and has copper in it, it will eat into the toons. As for knowing if it is or not. Don't know a lot about that. Other then all the ones I have seen the primer is green or gray. Not saying that is the only color of it just that is what I have seen. Might have a boat shop who paints toons take a look at it. There might be a test that can be done. Just a thought.

It looks like it has a green layer under the black overcoat but I guess youre right, I'll have him have an expert look at it.Gonefishing wrote:While if it is not aluminum paint and has copper in it, it will eat into the toons. If it's copper based paint, you will get green corrosion. First at all of the welds, then after a season or two, everywhere. Copper plus aluminum and water = a battery.

Get a multimeter and check for voltage while sitting in water, put the + on the toons and the - in the water and see what voltage you get, you need to check your water in your radiator in your car of truck too, anything over .2 you need to flush and replace anti freeze or your eating up aluminum parts.
