Factory Wax Coating on Premier Pontoon Toons

I have a 2011 Premier PTX which is one of the years that Premier dipped their pontoons in that wax coating to make them white. The problem that I have is that I have rubbed several areas of it off in my boat lift. I have fixed the boat lift rubbing problem but I need to fix my pontoons. These marks are actually areas where the wax coating has rubbed off down to aluminum. I tried some laquer thinner and some acid wash from fleet farm, but it doesn't take the wax coating off. I need to get this all off, or find something that will add it back on to fix this horrible look on my pontoons. I was told that Zep-A-Lume will work, can anyone help me with this? I would actually prefer to just recoat it, but based on my research and talking to premier, I may have to take it back off down to the bare aluminum. Please help!

I would call a Premier dealer. Im sure your not the first one to have this issue.

I did call premier, and they don't have an answer. They told me that they quit doing it because of this issue but there is no real solution that they have. I am hoping to find someone who has been able to strip this off somehow, or find a product that can add it back on?

Maybe give these folks a ring Larson Marine Storage. They have a exemption posted exclusively for Premier Pontoon boats and seem pretty confident they can destroy the original finish.. Maybe they will share with you what they use....

Yep, I found them in a search and found out that they use Zep-A-Lume. I need to find a place where I can buy just one gallon. I am also worried about what this may do to my trailer bunks. I am researching it though.

I HAD the same stuff on my Premier.... Its actually a polyurethane coating. Lacquer thinner and a rag takes it off. Soak a rag with a lot of it, dripping wet, and leave it on for a few minutes, remove the rag and it will be soft enough to wipe off with another rag. But... Premier sells the coating, so if you don't want to remove it, just re-apply it. I have a pic of how mine was before the polishing. I'll post it when I get home from work in the AM.

Wonder how Aircraft Paint Stripper would work at removing this coating?

I'm a big fan of any product produced by Zep, and their product is just another acid solution. Others include NAPA's metal brightener and the commercial pontoon boat cleaners sold at most boat dealerships. They will do the job.

Best to polish the boat with a dual action or high speed polisher to get the shine back. Getting the boat clean enough to apply Sharkhide has proven to be more work than I want. I just polish my Bennington every May or June--90 minute job with the right equipment and polish.

Interested in seeing your pic. Do you know what premier calls their product? I live 15 minutes from their headquarters. Customer service replied with a premier sealer part # 70000059 would this be what I am looking for? I would prefer to just reapply and cover the areas where it has rubbed off.

will that polyurethane coating return it to the white finish as shown on the top half of my pontoons?

With alum open to air and water it darkens. If you just recoat it will still have the dark areas

You can go over the scuffed spots with some ToonBrite to whiten them out. Here is the info on the glazing. For a quart, part# SC0001397-$36.00 Gallon Part#1sup96034-$106.00 It would be a lot easier than removing it and polishing. I considered it very hard before I decided to polish. That was only because I polished the previous Manitou's and loved it. In retrospect now. If I was to do it again, I would probably re-glaze. Removing that crap really sucks. Here are some pics. The first is how they looked before I bought the boat. I talked the price down a lot because of this. They looked bad! The second is after washing with the ToonBrite, I actually used the Sharkhide cleaner, but its exactly the same as ToonBrite. Clint just sent me the Sharkhide because I bought Sharkhide polish and protectant to use in my polishing article I wrote for Manitou and PDB mag. You can see how it took out the darkspots. This cleaned the tubes, did not take off the glazing. The glazing came off by letting laquer thinner soaked rags sit on it on pontoons to soften the glazing, then I had to use another soaked rag to scrubb and wipe it off. In some places, a plastic putty knife to scrape it off. When I say it sucks..... It sucks!!! About 3 or 4 hours into it I almost called Premier and ordered the glazing. That's why I say, to do it all over again....Unt uh!!!

Here's how it looked 4 days later. I was working nights when I did it. But I had probably a good honest 20 to 25 hours in it. And a lot of Aleve in my system afterwards! That's why I ask if it was worth it or not. Maybe....
