You've also got a number of nice lakes west of Greenville, SC--around Westminster, Anderson, etc. on the GA/SC state line. I sometimes go out on Lake Burton, just west of Clarksville, GA--where the houses run up to 20,000 square feet. It's a quite beautiful place.
The area on the mountain south of Asheville and in the far north of SC have absolutely incredible golfing communities. Places like Highlands/Cashiers, NC are Mercedes/Lexus/Jaguar communities.
Gary Player was in NW SC building a golf course, and it was so beautiful that he moved his complete golf architecture firm there--and his family.
