Shift Box Question

#1 Post by mbradford » Sat Feb 28, 2015 8:42 am

I am trying to find info on the shift box attached to my 1995 50HP evinrude.

It is not the original as my boat is a 1976.

I understand the key, but there are 2 other knobs below the key. have no idea of their purpose.

the lowest one looks electrical, but the wire on it is cut away and just hanging there. i need to to take the box apart, as the shift button I pull up on to put in gear is having issues.

can anyone give me some help on identifying the shift box ?

the manual I have (14203173-1958-1972_Johnson_Evinrude_Repair_Manual_50hp_Thru_125hp) does not show anything close to this. any help would be much appreciated.

Mike

Don't know that specific box but the two other items usually controlled are a drag adjustment on the ease of moving the trottle and motor trim/tilt. Newer control boxes also have overtemp, oil/water pressure. An old Chrysler on controller I had also had a push key electric choke control. Hope this helps trying to figure it out. If you had a make or model number on the controller you could probably search for a specific manual on it. I'be never seen one like it.

I had a 1976 Evinrude 70 horse that had a control box that looked like that in my first boat, a 1976 Crestliner, closed bow. I think that wire goes to the trim switch. The wire running up under the handle should not be there. I think someone cut the original for some reason and ran a jumper to the trim switch. Because I had a problem with mine where a trim switch wire broke inside the box. I took the box apart and fixed it. But I could see a lazier person pop the handle, drill a hole under it and run a jumper, through. There was also a wiring harness going to the tach, on those old Johnsons and Evinrudes. But that looks intact. That's all I can really tell from the picture. Anyone else?

got it figured out today. it is an OMC shift box.
the problem was the the shifter had split amd the previous owner ad wrapped it in electrical tape whichich wwas sticking when trying to engage the lockout.
I temporarily wrapped a piece of a beer cann around it and wrapped with duct tape then electrical tape.

probblen solved for now
