Extended warranty coverage...anyone ever buy this?

#1 Post by katieclooney » Tue Mar 10, 2015 11:16 am

So with the new boat I get 5 year warranty on the Merc outboard motor.
THey have an extended warranty that can go out to 8 years.

Is it worth it?? Ive never had a Merc or a 4 stroke so I am debating on getting this. Its around 1k extra

Hey Katie.
I didn't realize that you got new tubes (I was in deep hibernation). Congrats!
I sure hate to advise one way or another about warranty stuff. I like to think that anything wrong that might happen will usually be within the first year or so. Hopefully it works out that way for you...as long as it doesn't 'yell at you' :biggrin2

I agree that if something is going to break, it will be during the warranty period. From what my husband has read, these new motors are better than before and easier to maintain. My husband upgraded our new motor to include the Command Thrust for whatever reason.

If you are worried that much about your motor, get the extended warranty because today's repair rate is typically $100 an hour.

Mercury offers an extended as well. 7 years for 950 and it covers a lot.

Thoughts? Id feel better with a Merc one over a 3rd party warranty

Still hard to advise one way or the other. I definitely agree about factory warranty tho, if you are inclined to go that way. Third party extenders suck IMHO :fyou

which motor?

N/A 4 stroke, then the standard is plenty
supercharged, then I might think about an extended just because of the supercharger. The style of supercharger has been used in cars for years but the seals have been know to dry out go bad on those style which requires a rebuild after the grease is gone out of the bearings which would be over the cost of the warranty.

I extended my warranty on my Mercury Verado 150. I had coverage on my last boat's twin Yamaha 200s. One engine never needed it. The other, not so much. Was it worth Ithe buck$ Maybe not, but it took the sting out of marina service. With the current Verado supercharger, seemed like a good idea.

Rancherlee....its a Merc 50hp Big Foot.

Im leaning towards getting it. Everything is covered, i wouldnt have to have constant worry like i did with my 30 year old boat.

I am a worrier by nature, im tired of being scared :scared
