Tongue weight should be approx 10% of total trailer weight, if said trailer is setup for ideal pulling. However I'm sure there are plenty of variations out there.

Not sure if this will help with your problem, but possibly. I keep my boats on a property with a very curved and narrow drive way. trying to back into this drive is quite the adventure. My solution was to get a front mounted receiver on my Dodge 1500. Without a doubt the best 80 bucks I ever spent. I can now see where I'm going and put any of the 4 trailers I own anywhere I want. The only other mod I had to make was a power cord to the trailer surge brake relay so I could back it up without the brakes locking up.

Absolutely! Best investment of about $80 and half an hour of my labor to bolt it on.
Front hitch is a trick I learned back in the 60's for backing trailers into tight spaces, and around tough turns.

I have one of the trailer dollys that was originally shown. Best thing for moving trailers around in tight spaces. I use mine to pull my log splitter out so I can hook it to my riding mower (the splitter sits sideways in my storage shed so not enough room to get the riding mower in that direction).

I do like that other dolly that was pictured due to the third wheel. Then all of your efforts can go to steering the dolly without having to also keeping the dolly level.

The hitch on the front is a good idea too. My dad did that with our old RV back in the early 70's so he could use the RV to launch his little bass boat (which was too narrow to see it behind the RV). But back then, they weren't receiver hitches, but instead, they were permanent mounted hitches that were hell on shins of little kids running arond the RV.

sorry for being off topic, but I'd be really worried about being able to back up a wet ramp with virtually no weight on the campers' rear wheels if doing that. Scary thought.

Wow, that's a good point. I was referring to backing a 24 foot pontoon up my tight, curved driveway. Also, when I launch and recover, I ALWAYS have the truck in 4 wheel drive - just to be sure!

The old RV was built on a Ford van chassis. There was plenty of weight over the rear wheels -- the fridge sat on top of the axle, the sofa/bed in the back along with the generator and holding tanks. He never had a problem backing up any ramps - but maybe it was just because we never hit a really steep one.

Roland,

You want the 3 wheeled dolly. The two wheeled one is a nighmare. I bought the two wheeled version and immediately returned. The 3 wheeled version works really well. Northern Tools has it for the best price.

Steve... I agree, the hitch on the front end is a great idea, but for my application it just wont work. I needed something to manuever my boat and trailer in the storage building I use... my rental space is plenty wide, but it's located near the front ( and only ) door in and out of the building.. and because it's so close to the front, there's just not enough room to hook up and pull the trailer out without sliding the left side of my boat against the door... but its' a non issue now. I bought that dolly you mentioned above that has the 3 wheels... actually used it for the first time tonight when I took my boat back to the storage building... using my truck I backed the boat into the building then switched over to the dolly and with just a couple "back and forths" I was able to slide her ride into her space.... no more kicking the wheel on the trailer jack stand to try and get the trailer to go a certain way...
