Tilt up...no down-Bad relay?

#1 Post by IrishLindy » Sat Apr 11, 2015 4:48 pm

Just took the cover off the new-to-us 2002 Crest Sport. We were having problems near the end of last season with the tilt, and with the motor turning over. I bought a new battery for this season, and it will tilt up, but not always down. It is an intermittent problem. We took out the relay (blue for up, green for down, right?) swtiched them, and replaced the original relays. Got the tilt working both ways for a bit, but it still is going out on us intermittently....so not reliable at all.

Do we just replace both relays? Or do we have a bigger problem? Solenoid? or the hydraulics? We have not put it in the water yet.......

I told you all I would have some silly questions...this one stumped our local mechanic. He thinks if we replace both relays, we should be good. Thoughts?

Very easy fix. Replace both solenoids and problems should be over...

I don't know what they cost for your motor but the 70 fourstroke Suzuki I had before the rebuild they were 70 bucks apiece. I say change the bad one and the other only if it didn't work well or dependably.

They look to be about a $15.00 part....so luckily not quite as expensive as the Suzuki parts. At this point, I am inclined to order the two, and replace the bad one now. Keep the other as a spare.

Thanks for the response!

UPDATE: we replaced the old relay with a new relay, but were still having intermittent issues with the tilt. We discovered that if we raise it to a certain point, we can lower it back down, if needed. We decided that with a 40 HP 2 stroke, and the layout of our lake, the tilt issue was not enough to prevent us from putting the boat in the water. We are not going to be using it for tubing, and the top MPH on it is about 15-17. Additionally, our lake is only 113 acres, so not big enough where we could run it wide open for too long anyway.

We launched yesterday, and had a perfect day on the water. No issues at all with the tilt. It worked when we needed it to. I am a happy tooner, ATM.

Just a random thought here when the tilt is not working as it should what are you hearing; as in click only, nothing at all or a humming sound? Have you checked to see that the oil level in the T&T reserve is up to snuff?
